Chapter 9 - The Wedding in the Park

Spring came to Boston with a burst of pink cherry blossoms and warm green grass.
The wedding did not take place at the Harbor Club. There were no press photographers, no high-ranking politicians, no security teams sweeping the perimeter, and no ice sculptures shaping corporate logos.
It took place in the small, open-air pavilion at Castle Island park—the exact spot where Lily had first called Caleb "Daddy."
Forty people attended: Nora’s sister and her family, Marcus and his wife, local business partners from South Boston, and the nurses from the community clinic who had helped Nora during her pregnancy.
Caleb stood beneath a wooden arch decorated with white hydrangeas and eucalyptus leaves. He wore a simple, tailored navy suit. He looked relaxed, radiant, and intensely happy.
The music—played by a local acoustic guitarist—began to soft strum.
First came Lily.
The twenty-two-month-old girl wobbled down the grass aisle in a tiny white dress, carrying a basket of yellow flower petals, which she dropped one by one with extreme focus and seriousness.
The guests clapped softly, charmed by her innocence.
Then came Nora.
She walked down the aisle alone, holding a bouquet of wild white roses. She wore a simple, elegant lace gown that flowed around her feet like water. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely at peace.
When she reached the arch, Caleb took her hands.
The justice of the peace—a warm, grey-haired woman from South Boston—smiled at them.
"We are gathered here today," the justice began, "to celebrate the union of two people who learned that love is not built in houses of gold, but in the quiet, steady devotion of everyday life."
When it came time for the vows, Caleb didn't read from a prepared card. He looked directly into Nora’s eyes.
"Nora," Caleb said softly. "I used to think my legacy was something I had to build out of concrete, steel, and stock options. But standing here today, looking at you and our daughter, I know my true legacy is the love we share. I promise to cherish you, protect you, and stand by you through every storm life brings us."
Nora smiled, tears of joy reflecting the afternoon sun.
"Caleb," Nora said, her voice steady and true. "You showed me that a man can change his entire world to protect the people he loves. You chose us when you had everything to lose, and in doing so, you gave us everything that truly matters. I am yours, forever."
"By the power vested in me by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," the justice smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Caleb, you may kiss your bride."
Caleb pulled Nora into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply, while the forty guests erupted into cheers and applause.

Lily ran up to them, pulling on Caleb’s pant leg. "Me too! Me too!"
Caleb laughed, scooping both his wife and his daughter into his arms, holding his entire world in one single embrace.
