Chapter 10 - A Future Full of Light

Maren looked down at the simple silver ring, tears shining in her eyes. But this time, they weren't tears of grief or trauma—they were tears of joy.

She carefully set Clara into her bassinet, stood up, and looked at me.

“Rowan,” she whispered, stepping closer to me. “When I was walking along that dusty road, picking up cans, I thought my heart was completely dead. I thought love was just a lie rich people used to manipulate others.”

She reached out, her soft fingers touching my cheek.

“But when you knelt on my broken porch, when you fought to bring Clara back to my arms, and when you stood up to the world to prove my innocence… I saw the man I fell in love with years ago. The man who had just gotten lost in the dark.”

She smiled, a brilliant, breathtaking smile that warmed my soul.

“Yes, Rowan. I will marry you.”

I pulled her into my arms, kissing her deeply, surrounded by the warm afternoon sunlight filtering through the windows. Liam and Noah giggled softly, grabbing at my pant legs, while Clara made happy gurgling noises from her bassinet.

Six months later.

A small, quiet ceremony was held in the backyard of our country home. There were no press, no corporate board members, and no grand displays of wealth. Just a few true friends, Mark, and our three beautiful children.

Maren walked down the grass aisle wearing a simple lace dress, holding a bouquet of wildflowers. When she reached me, I took her hands, swearing my life, my heart, and my honor to her for all eternity.

That evening, as the sun began to set behind the golden hills, turning the sky into shades of orange and soft purple, Maren and I sat on the porch swing together. Liam and Noah were fast asleep in their room, and Clara was sleeping soundly against my chest.

Maren rested her head against my shoulder, wrapping her fingers through mine.

“What are you thinking about?” she asked softly.

I looked out across the peaceful green fields, feeling the gentle rhythm of our daughter’s breathing against my heart, and held the hand of the woman who had saved my soul.

“I’m thinking about how far we walked down that dusty road,” I whispered, kissing her softly. “And how blessed I am that it brought me home to you.”
