Chapter 5 - The Raid on Saint Helena Medical

At 4:00 PM, I returned to my command center at Mark’s security headquarters. Mark had pulled up aerial mapping and security schematics of Saint Helena Medical Institute, a high-security private pediatric facility nestled in the hills an hour outside the city.

“It’s owned by a subsidiary of Whitmore Healthcare,” Mark explained, pointing at the blueprints on a digital screen. “The entire fourth floor is heavily restricted. It’s registered as an experimental pediatric care unit, but our contacts inside confirm there is only one permanent patient on that floor: a nine-month-old girl under high-level security supervision.”

“Are there armed guards?” I asked, adjusting my coat.

“Yes. Private security hired directly by Evelyn Whitmore—Tessa’s mother,” Mark replied. “Rowan, if we go in there without a warrant, they’ll call the police. They’ll frame it as an armed abduction.”

“I own forty percent of the parent company that supplies Saint Helena’s medical tech,” I said, a cold smile touching my lips. “And more importantly, I am her biological father. Get the legal emergency custody injunction ready. We are going in with my personal legal team and my security detail. If anyone stands in my way, crush them.”

An hour later, a convoy of three black SUVs pulled up to the gates of Saint Helena Medical Institute.

The gate guard attempted to stop us, but Mark’s team bypassed the barrier instantly. We marched into the main lobby. The head administrator, a middle-aged woman named Dr. Aris, rushed out, flustered and indignant.

“Mr. Vance! What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is a private facility!” she shouted.

I didn't slow my stride. “Where is Clara Vance?”

“I… I don’t know who you’re talking about!” she stammered, blocking the elevator doors.

I pulled out the hospital records, along with the DNA match authorization forms and the emergency injunction signed by a federal judge thirty minutes prior—a judge who owed his appointment to my late father.

“You are harboring a kidnapped child under the guise of an illegal guardianship agreement signed under duress,” I said, my voice echoing off the marble walls of the lobby. “If you don’t press the elevator button to the fourth floor in three seconds, my legal team will file child trafficking charges against you personally. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary.”

Dr. Aris turned white as paper. Her hands shook violently as she pulled out her keycard and scanned the elevator.

The doors slid open. We stepped inside.

When we reached the fourth floor, two security guards stepped forward, reaching for their holsters. Mark and my security team moved with lightning speed, disarming and pinning them to the floor before they could draw their weapons.

I walked down the quiet, sterile hallway until I reached Room 402.

Inside, sitting in a state-of-the-art medical crib surrounded by heart monitors, was a small baby girl. She had dark hair like Maren, but when she turned her head toward the door, her bright blue eyes were undeniable.

She was hooked up to IV lines, looking tiny and fragile against the white sheets.

My heart shattered into a thousand pieces. I approached the crib, resting my hands on the plastic rail.

“Clara,” I whispered.

The baby blinked, her tiny lips parting into a soft, gurgling sound as she reached her small hand toward me.

I looked at the attending nurse standing in the corner, paralyzed with fear. “Is she stable enough to be moved?”

May you like

“Yes, sir,” the nurse stammered. “Her heart surgery was successful three months ago. She… she’s fully recovered. She was only kept here under strict orders from Mrs. Whitmore not to release her to anyone.”

“Disconnect the monitors,” I ordered softly, tears blurring my vision. “My daughter is coming home.”
