Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Met

The history of Isabella Rossi was a masterpiece of intelligence construction. Two hours later, inside a secure warehouse in Brooklyn, Aleandro stood before a massive corkboard pinned with documents, birth certificates, and tax records spanning twenty years.
"Her father wasn't a history teacher," Marco explained, tapping a photograph of an older man with graying hair. "His name was Robert Vance. Christopher Vance’s older brother. He was an undercover operative who was killed in Marseille fifteen years ago during a joint operation involving your father's old Mediterranean shipping lanes."
Aleandro felt the pieces of the puzzle begin to lock together with a sickening, heavy thud. "She isn't an innocent civilian who got blackmailed. She’s legacy. She came to that charity concert three years ago with a target already painted on my back."
"Her mother didn't die of illness either," Marco continued, flipping through a folder of old police reports. "She died in a safe house protection program that failed. Isabella changed her name, built the identity of a quiet art historian, and spent five years infiltrating the circles that would lead her to you. She didn’t just meet you by accident, Aleandro. She engineered the entire three years of your relationship."
Aleandro reached out, his thumb running over a surveillance photo of Isabella laughing as they walked through Central Park two summers ago. The memories felt like a physical poison in his blood. Every midnight conversation, every shared secret, every plan they had made for the future—it had all been an execution strategy.
"She’s good," Aleandro whispered, a dangerous grin touching his lips—the cold, predatory expression his father used to wear before a purge. "She sat at my table, slept in my bed, and looked at the photos of my dead sister while calculating exactly how many years I would spend in a maximum-security prison."
"We can pull the plug now," Marco said, his hand resting on his firearm. "An accident on the way to the boutique. The Colombo family takes the blame. We clear the field before the feds can act on whatever information she’s already extracted from that device."
"No," Aleandro snapped, his voice sharp as a gunshot. "If she disappears now, Vance executes his backup plan. They already have the recordings from the last forty-eight hours. Fortunately, we didn't discuss anything actionable during that time. But if we kill her, they use the existing surveillance to freeze our assets under emergency provisions. We must discredit the evidence before it ever reaches a grand jury."
"How?"

"We feed the wire exactly what Agent Vance wants to hear," Aleandro turned back to the board, his eyes fixing on the photograph of Christopher Vance. "We give them a conspiracy so massive, so catastrophic, that they will delay their arrests to capture the entire prize. And while they are waiting for a ghost ship to arrive at the docks, we will dismantle their entire operation from the inside out."
He walked out of the warehouse, his mind shifting into the hyper-calm state of a commander entering the decisive battle. Isabella thought she was the hunter. It was time to show her what happened when the wolf allowed the trap to close around its own foot just to pull the trapper into the dark.
