Chapter 4 - The Scripted Confession

That evening, the penthouse office was staged like a theatre production. Aleandro sat behind his desk, a bottle of expensive whiskey open, two glasses poured. The oil painting of the Venetian harbor remained on the wall, its tiny red light hidden behind the canvas, silently transmitting every vibration in the room to a federal listening post somewhere downtown.

Marco entered, slamming a heavy leather briefcase onto the desk with a manufactured urgency that would sound flawless over an audio feed.

"The container from Rotterdam clears customs at midnight on Thursday, Aleandro," Marco said, his voice tense, perfectly mimicking a man caught in a high-stakes smuggling operation. "The manifest lists industrial machinery, but the false bulkheads are loaded with the automated defense components Enzo requested. If the port authority checks the serial numbers, we’re done."

Aleandro leaned back, his chair creaking slightly—a sound the federal technicians would recognize. He took a slow sip of his whiskey before speaking into the open room.

"Enzo has already secured the customs supervisors, Marco," Aleandro replied, his voice authoritative, confident. "The shipment won't be checked. Once those components are delivered to the warehouse in Long Island City, we will have enough leverage to dictate terms to every family on the Commission. The Moretti name will control the entire Eastern logistics corridor by Friday morning."

"And the federal surveillance?" Marco asked, right on script. "My boys spotted Vance's units near the perimeter yesterday."

"Let Vance watch," Aleandro laughed—a cold, arrogant sound that he knew would make Christopher Vance lean closer to his headphones. "Vance is chasing shadows. He thinks he’s tracking a simple numbers racket. He has no idea we’re rewriting the infrastructure of the entire port system. By the time he realizes what’s in those containers, the paperwork will be buried under five layers of international maritime law. Just ensure the tracking codes are transferred to my personal laptop tomorrow night."

Outside the office door, the hallway remained quiet. But Aleandro knew that within seconds, the digital file of this conversation was being analyzed by federal voice-recognition software. Vance would see this as the definitive proof he needed to secure a sweeping racketeering and national security indictment. He would shift every available resource to the Rotterdam container arriving Thursday night—the night before the wedding.

A few minutes later, the office door opened smoothly. Isabella walked in, carrying a tray with two fresh cups of espresso. She looked beautiful, her dark hair falling in soft curls over her shoulders, her smile warm and gentle.

"You look like you're carrying the weight of the world, gentlemen," she said, setting the tray down on the coffee table. She walked over to Aleandro, her hands resting gently on his shoulders, her fingers massaging the tension in his neck.

Aleandro looked up at her, meeting her eyes. If he hadn't seen the tape, he would have believed the warmth in her touch. He would have believed the love in her eyes. It was a flawless performance.

"Just final details for the weekend, baseline business," Aleandro said, reaching up to take her hand, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. Her skin was cool. "Everything is coming together perfectly, Isabella. By Friday, our lives will change forever."

"Yes," Isabella whispered, her gaze drifting for a fraction of a second toward the oil painting behind his desk before returning to his face. "Forever."
