Chapter 7 - The Transition

In the weeks following the meeting at the Drake Hotel, the city of Chicago experienced a quiet, bloodless transition of power. The Moretti family’s empire was dismantled and absorbed into the Calder organization, while Lorenzo Moretti disappeared from the city’s social registers, never to be heard from again.

But the biggest change was happening inside Lakeview Metropolitan Medical Center.

Maggie Bennett had resigned from her position as a night-shift nurse.

On her last day, she walked out of the hospital carrying her personal belongings in a small cardboard box. She did not look back at the private wing or the nurses' station where Celeste Burke had once ruled with petty cruelty. She felt no regret. She had spent eight years of her life in those sterile hallways, but she had finally outgrown them.

Waiting for her at the curb was the polished black Mercedes GLS.

Declan Shaw opened the door, bowing slightly as he took her box. "Miss Bennett. Your new office is ready."

Maggie smiled, entering the vehicle.

Her "new office" was a beautiful, three-story brick building on the North Side of Chicago—the newly established Calder Community Clinic.

Roman had purchased the property and funded the entire operation, placing Maggie in charge as the Director of Clinical Operations. The clinic was designed to provide free, high-quality medical care to the working-class families of the neighborhood—the very people the city’s elite hospitals usually ignored.

"It’s beautiful, Roman," Maggie said later that afternoon, standing in the spacious, sunlit lobby of the clinic.

Roman stood beside her, his hands in his pockets. He was dressed in a casual charcoal sweater, his collar unbuttoned for the first time in eleven years. His leather gloves were gone.

"It’s yours, Maggie," Roman said, his gray eyes soft as he looked at her. "You spent your whole life being invisible while you saved people. I wanted to build a place where everyone can see exactly who you are."

"And what about you?" Maggie asked, turning to face him. "Are you going to let my staff treat your injuries now?"

Roman let out a soft laugh, taking a step closer to her. "Only if the Director of Clinical Operations approves of the treatment."

He reached out, his bare hand hovering over her arm.

"Can I?" he asked quietly.

"One," Maggie whispered, her eyes shining.

"Two," Roman continued, his voice dropping into a low, warm register.

"Three," they said together.

Roman’s hand landed on her arm, his bare fingers wrapping gently around her wrist. The warmth of his touch was like a heavy, protective blanket, sealing out the coldness of the world, leaving only the two of them standing in the sunlit room.
