Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The success of the Calder Community Clinic was immediate, but the peace of Maggie’s new life was about to be challenged by a shadow from Roman’s past.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening when a woman walked into the clinic.

She was dressed in a wet, expensive trench coat, her dark hair perfectly styled despite the storm, her pale face carrying a sharp, elegant beauty that looked familiar.

Maggie stood behind the reception desk, her nurse's instincts instantly picking up on the woman's nervous, frantic energy.

"Can I help you?" Maggie asked.

The woman looked around the clean, modern lobby, her eyes settling on Maggie’s large figure. A slow, mocking smile spread across her lips.

"So, you’re the one," the woman said, her voice dripping with a polished, high-society accent. "The fat nurse who thinks she cured Roman Calder."

Maggie’s brow furrowed. "And who are you?"

The woman pulled back her hood, revealing a face that had been featured in every Chicago society column twelve years ago—before she had disappeared into the night.

"My name is Victoria," the woman said, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, manipulative light. "And I’ve come to take back what belongs to me."
