Chapter 1 - The First Counter-Strike

The glossy white paper of the legal summons trembled slightly between Claire’s fingers, but her eyes remained cold and clear.

In the sunlit breakfast nook, four-year-old Owen was carefully placing blueberry eyes and a strawberry smile onto a pancake. He looked up at her, his cheeks sticky with syrup. "Mommy, look! He's happy because we're going to the park today!"

"He looks very happy, sweetie," Claire said, keeping her voice completely steady as she sat down beside him, shielding the legal papers under a placemat.

Emergency temporary custody. Exclusive use of the townhouse. Allegations of medical incapacitation, emotional instability, and child endangerment. Grant had moved with terrifying speed, striking while her body was still processing the harsh toxins of yesterday's chemotherapy infusion.

He thought she would panic. He thought a sick, exhausted woman would collapse under the weight of a legal ambush, weep, and agree to whatever settlement he dictated.

He had forgotten who Claire Whitmore was before she became his wife.

Before her diagnosis, Claire had been a senior risk analyst for a major financial firm in downtown Chicago. She spent eight years identifying corporate fraud, unraveling hidden paper trails, and predicting how corrupt actors concealed their tracks. Grant had mistaken her quiet patience during her illness for surrender.

"Owen," Claire said softly, tapping his nose. "Mommy needs to make a quick phone call to Aunt Elena. Why don't you finish your juice and put your dinosaur shoes on?"

Five minutes later, Claire was standing in her bedroom, looking into the open, empty velvet box where her mother’s sapphire bracelet had sat for seven years.

She dialed a number she had saved two weeks ago.

"Elena Vance," a sharp, articulate female voice answered on the second ring.

"Elena, it's Claire," she said. "He served me."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of a pen tapping against a glass desk. Elena Vance was not just Claire’s college roommate; she was one of the most formidable family law attorneys in Cook County, specializing in high-conflict divorces involving high-net-worth individuals and covert abuse.

"What did he go with?" Elena asked calmly.

"Emergency ex parte petition for sole custody and temporary possession of the residence," Claire read directly from the filing. "He claims my chemotherapy renders me physically and mentally unfit to care for Owen. He attached a photograph taken of me walking into the oncology center yesterday morning."

"The photograph he staged by stealing your prepaid caregiver," Elena noted, her voice hardening. "How are you feeling physically, Claire?"

"My white blood cell count is stable, my mind is completely clear, and I am furious," Claire replied, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of quiet, lethal focus. "He took my mother's bracelet, Elena. Brooke Ellis was wearing it at the corporate gala last night. It's captured in high-resolution photographs on the company’s public public relations page."

"He took stolen property from a locked safe and gifted it to his mistress?" Elena let out a short, cold laugh. "Grant just committed grand larceny in the middle of a custody maneuver. Do you have the login logs for the Bluebird Care app?"

"I have the recorded phone call, the account modification history showing his IP address changing the location to East Astor Street at 11:42 p.m. on Wednesday, and the timestamped text messages where he tried to coerce me into canceling my treatment," Claire said. "I spent forty-five minutes organizing the evidence folder before Owen woke up."

"Good," Elena said crisply. "Here is what we do. Grant’s attorney, Richard Sterling, is going to file a motion for an emergency hearing tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., expecting us to ask for a continuance because you're 'too sick' to respond. We are not going to ask for a continuance. We are going to show up."

"And the bracelet?"

"File a formal police report for residential theft right now," Elena instructed. "Do not tell Grant. Name Brooke Ellis as the individual currently in possession of the stolen asset, and provide the link to the gala photograph. Let the Chicago Police Department do our legwork for the custody hearing."

Claire closed her eyes, feeling the faint, metallic taste of the chemotherapy drugs at the back of her throat. She took a deep, deliberate breath, letting the icy anger replace her physical fatigue.

"I'm ready, Elena," Claire said.

"Grant thinks he's playing chess against a sick woman, Claire," Elena said before hanging up. "He has no idea he's sitting across from a master auditor. See you at my office in one hour."
