Chapter 3 - Eviction on Astor Street

At 4:15 p.m. that afternoon, two uniform Chicago Police Department cruisers pulled up outside the Whitmore townhouse on Lincoln Park West.

Claire stood on the front steps, her arms crossed over her cream blazer, flanked by Elena and a court-appointed sheriff's deputy.

Inside, Grant was frantically throwing his designer suits, shoes, and luxury watches into three leather duffel bags. His face was flushed red with humiliation and fury.

"You think you're so smart, don't you, Claire?" Grant spat as he dragged his bags into the marble foyer, glaring at her with unbridled malice. "You think Elena Vance and a sympathetic judge are going to save you? You don't have the money to fight me long-term! My salary funds this entire life! The moment the firm finds out you're dragging my name through court, I'll cut off the medical insurance!"

Claire didn't flinch. She stepped forward, handing him a sealed white envelope.

"What is this?" Grant demanded.

"A formal notice served to your HR department and executive board two hours ago," Claire said smoothly. "Under federal law, your corporate health insurance policy cannot be altered, canceled, or modified during active divorce proceedings under the standing court injunction issued by Judge Montgomery. If you attempt to tamper with my coverage, your firm’s legal counsel will be served with a third-party contempt motion within fifteen minutes."

Grant’s jaw worked silently. He realized, with a sickening drop in his stomach, that every move he made had already been anticipated, analyzed, and neutralized.

"And as for your salary, Grant," Claire added quietly, "the forensic accountant appointed by the court, Mr. David Miller, has already frozen your secondary investment accounts at Apex Capital after discovering three unauthorized transfers totaling four hundred thousand dollars to a shell company registered under Brooke Ellis's name."

Grant stopped in his tracks. "How... how did you know about Apex?"

"You left your tablet synced to the house printer three months ago," Claire said, offering him a cool, brilliant smile. "I told you, Grant. You turned our marriage into a case. I just audited it."

"Time to leave, sir," the sheriff's deputy instructed, stepping between Grant and Claire. "Pick up your bags and step outside."

Grant snatched his duffel bags, glaring at Claire with a hatred so intense it was almost palpable. "You're going to regret this, Claire. Brooke and I have resources you can't even imagine. You'll be living in a studio apartment by the time this is over."

"Goodbye, Grant," Claire said quietly, opening the heavy front door. "Please leave your key on the console table."

Grant slammed the door behind him so hard the glass side panels rattled.

From the upstairs window, four-year-old Owen watched his father’s dark sedan pull away from the curb. Claire walked up the stairs, knelt beside her son, and pulled him into a warm, protective embrace.

"Is Daddy going to live somewhere else now?" Owen asked softly, his little hand holding onto her sleeve.

"Yes, sweetie," Claire whispered, kissing his forehead. "Daddy is living somewhere else. But you and Mommy are staying right here. And nobody is ever going to disrupt our home again."

That evening at 7:30 p.m., two police detectives knocked on the door of Brooke Ellis’s luxury high-rise apartment on East Astor Street.

Brooke answered the door wearing a silk lougewear set, holding a glass of Pinot Noir. Grant was standing in her living room, pouring himself a scotch.

"Ms. Brooke Ellis?" Detective Miller asked, showing his badge.

"Yes?" Brooke asked, her voice laced with annoyance. "What is this about?"

"We are executing a search warrant in connection with police report number 24-0891 regarding stolen personal property—specifically a vintage platinum and blue sapphire line bracelet valued at fifty-five thousand dollars."

Brooke’s face went completely ash-grey. Her hand instinctively flew to her wrist, where the sapphire bracelet was currently resting against her skin.

"We're going to need you to step forward and place your hands behind your back, ma'am," the detective said calmly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Grant!" Brooke shrieked, backing away in terror. "Grant, do something! What is happening?!"

Grant stepped forward, his face pale with panic. "Officers, wait! This is a family misunderstanding! That bracelet belongs to my wife—"

"And your wife filed a formal report for felony grand larceny, sir," the second officer interrupted, grabbing Brooke’s arm and clicking the handcuffs around her wrists. "Ms. Ellis, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As Brooke was led out of her building in handcuffs in front of her affluent neighbors, Grant stood frozen in her living room, realization finally washing over him like ice water:

Claire was no longer defending herself. She was systematically dismantling everything he had built.
