Chapter 2 - The Silent War

By midnight, the Costello estate was fully locked down under the guise of an upgraded security protocol. To the outside world, nothing had changed. The captains still managed their territories, the money still flowed through the legal fronts, and Dominic Reyes still conducted daily business from the central office downtown.

Inside the east wing of the estate, however, a secret war had begun.

In a refurbished basement room originally built as a private gym, Luca sat surrounded by a specialized medical team brought in under absolute secrecy from Switzerland by Marcus. Dr. Henrik Lind, a brilliant neuro-physiologist who owed his life to Luca’s late father, was reviewing the latest blood work.

"The toxin levels are already dropping, Luca," Dr. Lind said, adjusting his glasses as he analyzed the screen. "Vance was giving you the compound through your nightly saline drip. Since we disconnected it thirty-six hours ago, your spinal inflammation has decreased by twelve percent."

"When do we begin physical therapy?" Luca demanded. His voice was taut, brimming with an urgency he hadn't felt in over a decade.

"Now," Lind said firmly. "But it will be agony. Your muscles have atrophiēd. Your nervous system is going to react to the awakening pathways with intense, burning pain. And most importantly—no one outside this room can know. If Dominic suspects you are recovering, he will not hesitate to finish the job with a bullet."

"Let it burn," Luca said flatly.

For the next three hours, the quiet room became a theater of excruciating discipline. Assisted by two physical therapists who had signed non-disclosure agreements enforceable by death, Luca was lifted out of his chair. They placed him in a specialized harness suspended above a treadmill.

The moment his feet touched the moving belt, a sensation like liquid fire coursed up his legs. It felt as though thousands of white-hot needles were piercing his muscles simultaneously. Sweat poured from his brow, dripping onto his chest as his teeth ground together so hard his jaw ached.

"Again," Luca grunted through clenched teeth, his arms shaking violently as he gripped the parallel bars for support.

"That’s enough for tonight, Luca," Lind warned, watching the heart monitor spike. "If you tear the muscle tissue now, you will set yourself back months."

"I said again," Luca snarled, his eyes blazing with a terrifying intensity. "Every day I sit in that chair is another day my daughter believes her father is a helpless cripple. Move the belt."

He took a step. It was clumsy, dragging, supported almost entirely by the harness, but it was a step. The pain made his vision blur, but beneath the agony, he felt something else: the undeniable, glorious sensation of weight pushing back against his soles.

When the session finally ended at 3:00 AM, Luca was wheeled back up to his private quarters, his body trembling from exhaustion. Yet, despite the physical devastation, his mind was sharper than it had been in years.

He didn't sleep. Instead, he reviewed the financial ledgers of the Costello empire that Marcus had quietly retrieved from the central server.

With Vance secured in the cellar, Luca began to trace the financial web Dominic Reyes had woven over the last twelve years. What he found was a masterclass in systematic theft. Dominic hadn't just taken control of the street operations; he had been funneling millions of dollars from the family’s legitimate real estate holdings into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands.

Dominic was preparing for a complete takeover. He was waiting for Luca to die—or perhaps, Luca realized with cold clarity, Dominic was planning to accelerate his death now that the family’s old alliances were shifting.

At 7:00 AM, a soft knock sounded at his bedroom door.

Elena Harper stepped inside, carrying a tray with fresh coffee and toast. She looked tired, dark circles faint beneath her eyes, but her posture was straight and defensive.

"Maya is awake," Elena said quietly, setting the tray on the side table. "She wants to go out to the garden."

Luca looked at her. "Does she know yet?"

Elena held his gaze. "I told her last night. I told her that you were her father."

Luca felt a sudden, rare tightness in his throat. "What did she say?"

A faint, soft smile touched Elena’s lips—the first real emotion she had shown him since entering the estate. "She listened to me very carefully. Then she asked if that meant she could keep using the baseball diamond whenever she wanted."

Luca let out a short, quiet laugh—a sound so unfamiliar in these halls that even he was startled by it. "She is remarkable."

"She gets her stubbornness from you," Elena said. She walked closer, her eyes scanning his pale face, noting the sheen of sweat lingering on his forehead and the subtle tremor in his hands. "You look like you’ve been through hell."

"I am coming back from it," Luca said softly. He reached out, his fingers hovering over her hand resting on the armrest. "Elena... I know I don't deserve your trust. But I promise you, as long as I draw breath, no harm will ever come to you or Maya again."

Elena looked down at his hand. Slowly, deliberately, she lowered her fingers, resting them lightly over his knuckles. The touch was warm, sending a ripple through the icy discipline he had maintained all night.

"The man who did this to you," Elena whispered. "He's still out there, isn't he?"

"He's closer than you think," Luca replied, his voice turning cold. "Which is why I need you to listen to me very carefully. For the next few weeks, nothing changes. You continue your work. Maya continues to play. You treat me exactly as you have—as a helpless man in a chair."

"And what are you going to do?"

Luca’s dark eyes flashed with a lethal, ancient fire. "I am going to let Dominic Reyes believe he has already won."
