Chapter 7 - The Last Supper

Thursday arrived with a cold, blinding sunlight reflecting off the fresh snow.
By 1:30 PM, three luxury black sedans sped up the winding driveway of the Vanguard Estate, their tires crunching heavily over the frozen gravel.
Dominic Reyes stepped out of the lead vehicle. He was wearing an expensive camel-hair coat, a dark suit, and a broad, victorious grin. Behind him stepped four broad-shouldered men carrying heavy leather duffel bags—the mercenaries disguised as private security.
Elena stood at the top of the grand entrance steps, holding the door open. Her face was a mask of perfect, professional neutrality.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Reyes," Elena said smoothly, bowing her head slightly.
Dominic paused on the threshold, looking down at her with condescending amusement. "Ah, the housekeeper. Is the boss ready for us?"
"Mr. Costello is waiting in the main dining room, sir," Elena replied. "He requested that all council members sit for wine before the signing."
"Excellent," Dominic chuckled, stepping past her into the grand foyer. He gestured to his four mercenaries. "You boys stay in the hall. Keep the perimeter tight."
The mercenaries nodded silently, positioning themselves near the grand staircase, their hands resting near their heavy coats.
Dominic, accompanied by Frankie "The Hammer" and two other loyal captains, walked down the long, carpeted hallway toward the double doors of the formal dining room.
Inside, the room was dimly lit, illuminated primarily by the roaring fire in the hearth and the silver candelabras resting on the long mahogany table. A crystal decanter of vintage red wine and six glasses sat prepared near the head of the table.
In his usual spot, sitting at the far end of the long table in his velvet wheelchair, was Luca Costello. A heavy cashmere blanket covered his legs.
"Luca!" Dominic boomed cheerfully, spreading his arms wide as he entered the room. "A fine day for a new chapter, my brother!"
Frankie and the other two captains took their seats along the table. Dominic walked directly to Luca’s right side, placing a thick leather binder containing the final trust transfer documents onto the mahogany surface. Beside the binder, he laid an expensive gold fountain pen.
"Everything is prepared," Dominic said smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "Once you sign these documents, Luca, you can finally rest. No more worries about the docks, no more stress about the street territories. I will handle the burden of the empire."
Luca didn't touch the pen. He looked up at Dominic, his dark eyes unblinking, terrifyingly calm.
"You speak of burdens, Dominic," Luca said, his raspy voice echoing through the quiet room. "For twelve years, I carried the heaviest burden a man can carry. I believed my own body had broken."
Dominic’s smile faltered slightly, a flicker of unease passing through his eyes before he quickly masked it with a sympathetic nod. "Yes, yes... a tragic twist of fate, my friend. But today, we look forward."
"It wasn't fate, Dominic," Luca said softly.
The room grew instantly quiet. Frankie frowned, looking between Luca and Dominic.
"What do you mean, Luca?" Frankie asked.
Luca reached up, slowly lifting the cashmere blanket from his lap and tossing it onto the floor.
Dominic’s eyes locked onto Luca's legs. "Luca, don't dwell on the past—"
"Dr. Julian Vance was arrested four days ago, Dominic," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into an icy, lethal register. "He is currently sitting in my sub-basement. He gave me a full confession. He gave me the chemical breakdown of the nerve toxin you paid him to put in my IV drip every week for twelve years."
Frankie gasped, snapping his head toward Dominic. "What?!"
Dominic’s face drained of all color. His hands slammed onto the table as he stood up, his polished facade instantly shattering into raw, venomous rage.
"You're insane!" Dominic hissed, reaching into his jacket for his concealed firearm. "You're a sick, dying old man who has lost his mind!"
"I am neither sick," Luca said, his voice ringing through the hall like a hammer on an anvil, "nor dying."
Before Dominic could pull his weapon, Luca Costello placed both hands flat on the mahogany table—and stood up.
Frankie cried out in sheer, paralyzed terror, knocking his chair over as he scrambled backward. The other two captains stood frozen in absolute shock, their mouths agape as they looked up at the towering, six-foot-two monarch they had believed was a helpless cripple.
Dominic froze, his hand still trapped inside his jacket, staring at Luca as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the grave.

"How..." Dominic choked out, his voice trembling with a sudden, overwhelming terror. "How are you standing?!"
"Because dead things don't try, Dominic," Luca said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "And I am very much alive."
