CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Opened the Door
Derek Bennett backed away from the security monitors as alarms exploded across the facility.
“What did you do?!” he shouted.
Alexander stepped into the control room like it belonged to him.
“It’s over,” he said simply.
Derek laughed, panicked. “You can’t just walk into my company and—”
“I already did,” Alexander interrupted.
He tossed a file onto the table.
Bank transfers.
Hidden debts.
Evidence of fraud.
And a recording.
Derek’s voice from earlier.
“The life insurance pays triple…”
Derek went pale.
“You’re recording me?”
Alexander leaned forward slightly.
“I’ve been recording you for six months.”
Silence.
Derek’s breath shook.
“You don’t understand. I had no choice—”
“There is always a choice,” Alexander said coldly. “You chose wrong.”
A pause.
Then softly:
“How long does it take for a pregnant woman to die in a -50 freezer, Derek?”
Derek couldn’t answer.
Alexander straightened.
“Forty minutes,” he said for him. “She’s at twenty-three.”
Derek’s face collapsed.
