CHAPTER 2 — The Name That Broke the Silence

The moment I said nothing, the silence became heavier.

Leo stood slightly behind me, holding my hand tighter than before. He could feel it too—that invisible pressure in the air, like the house itself had remembered how to hate me.

My father finally spoke.

“Say it,” he said hoarsely. “Who is his father?”

My mother grabbed the doorframe for support.

“Emma… don’t do this,” she whispered. “Not after ten years.”

I looked at them both.

And for the first time in a decade, I didn’t feel like a frightened nineteen-year-old girl.

I felt like a mother who had survived everything they thought would destroy her.

“His name,” I said slowly, “is Daniel Mercer.”

The world stopped.

My mother’s knees gave out slightly.

My father’s face turned a shade I had never seen before—something between shock and fear.

“No…” my mother whispered. “No, that’s impossible.”

My father stepped forward.

“You’re lying.”

I shook my head.

“I wish I was.”

Leo looked up at me.

“Mom… who is that?”

I squeezed his hand.

“You’re about to find out.”

My father backed away like the walls were closing in.

“That man is dead,” he said.

I nodded.

“That’s what you told yourselves, yes.”

My mother started crying.

“No… Emma, listen to me. If this is true—if you’re telling us—”

I interrupted her.

“It is true.”

A long silence.

Then my father whispered the words that changed everything.

“Emma… Daniel Mercer didn’t die in an accident.”

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?”

My father looked at my mother.

She wouldn’t meet his eyes.

And in that moment, I understood something horrifying:

They were not only hiding shame.

They were hiding a crime.
