Chapter 2 — The Flash Drive That Terrified a Mafia Empire

The flash drive sat on the white linen tablecloth between Dominic Salvatore and Sophia Moretti.
It was ordinary.
Black plastic.
No label.
No markings.
Worth less than twenty dollars.
Yet every person in L'Oasis understood that it had somehow become the most valuable object in the room.
Dominic did not touch it immediately.
Men who survived as long as he had learned never to rush toward anything handed to them by an enemy.
Even one who claimed to have become something else.
Rain continued beating against the towering windows overlooking Central Park.
Inside, the violinist quietly lowered his instrument.
No one complained.
Music no longer belonged in the room.
Truth did.
A Test of Trust
Dominic finally spoke.
"If I plug this into one of my systems..."
He looked directly into Sophia's eyes.
"...does it destroy my network?"
Sophia shook her head.
"No."
"It could."
"It won't."
Vincent stepped forward.
"I'll have our cyber team examine it."
Sophia smiled faintly.
"I expected you would."
She reached into her apron again.
Vincent tensed.
Instead of a weapon, she produced an identical flash drive.
Then another.
And another.
Four in total.
She lined them neatly on the table.
"There are twelve copies."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"Twelve?"
"Stored in twelve different cities."
A pause.
"If I disappear tonight, every copy is automatically delivered."
Silence.
Not because anyone admired her preparation.
Because they recognized it.
It was exactly the kind of contingency Dominic himself would have built.
For the first time that evening, he wasn't looking at a waitress.
He was looking at someone who thought like an empire.
The First Video
Vincent signaled one of Dominic's security specialists.
A hardened man named Marco stepped forward carrying an encrypted tablet.
He connected the drive through an isolated reader.
"No network connection," Marco confirmed.
"Air-gapped system."
Sophia nodded.
"Good."
A single folder appeared.
OPEN FIRST
Dominic looked at Sophia.
She simply said,
"Press play."
Marco obeyed.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then a recording.
A dim warehouse.
Timestamped eight months earlier.
Several men stood around a conference table.
The camera angle suggested hidden surveillance.
One voice spoke first.
"Dominic's becoming predictable."
Another answered.
"He trusts his wife."
Laughter.
Then a third man.
"That will make the succession easier."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
He knew none of the voices.
But one sentence froze everyone.
"When Luca dies, Salvatore Holdings fractures automatically."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Isabella Loses Her Composure
"Fake."
Isabella spoke too quickly.
"It's obviously fabricated."
Marco immediately shook his head.
"No digital manipulation."
He checked again.
"Original recording."
Sophia folded her hands.
"You recognized the voices."
It wasn't a question.
Isabella stared back.
"No."
Sophia tilted her head.
"Then why were you so certain it was fake before anyone examined it?"
For the second time that night...
Isabella answered a question nobody had asked.
Dominic's First Order
Dominic stood.
"Vincent."
"Boss."
"Call Luca."
Vincent immediately pulled out his phone.
Three rings.
Four.
Five.
No answer.
He frowned.
"Tried twice already before dinner."
Dominic's eyes hardened.
"Again."
Still nothing.
The room felt smaller.
Marco's phone vibrated.
He looked down.
Then toward Dominic.
"Our surveillance team just lost visual contact with Mr. Salvatore's motorcade."
No one spoke.
Until Sophia quietly asked,
"What route was he taking?"
Vincent answered automatically.
"FDR Drive."
Sophia closed her eyes.
"No."
Dominic looked sharply at her.
"What?"
"They won't hit him there."
She opened her eyes.
"They'll wait until the Midtown tunnel."
Three Minutes Too Late
Vincent's radio exploded with frantic voices.
"Shots fired!"
"Repeat, shots fired!"
"Vehicle disabled!"
"Principal extracting!"
Every armed man inside the restaurant moved instantly.
Chairs scraped.
Weapons appeared beneath jackets.
Guests screamed.
Dominic didn't move.
He simply listened.
Another voice came through.
"Target alive!"
Pause.
"Driver wounded."
Then—
"Attackers escaped."
Dominic slowly turned toward Sophia.
"How did you know?"
She answered with heartbreaking honesty.
"Because I helped build their operational models."
The room went completely silent.
The Truth About Sophia
Dominic stared at her.
"You worked for them."
"No."
"I infiltrated them."
"Sixteen years?"
She nodded.
"I needed them to trust me."
Vincent stepped closer.
"So all this time..."
"I've been collecting evidence."
Dominic studied her face.
"Why?"
Sophia looked out the rain-covered windows.
"When my family died..."
She paused.
"I believed you ordered it."
Another pause.
"I was wrong."
Dominic didn't interrupt.
"My grandfather left instructions."
She looked back at him.
"'Never seek revenge until you know the whole truth.'"
"So you investigated."
"For sixteen years."
"And?"
Her voice softened.
"You didn't start the war."
The Real Enemy
Sophia opened another folder.
Family photographs appeared.
Corporate records.
Shipping manifests.
Political donations.
Then one name surfaced repeatedly.
Victor DeLuca
Dominic's expression changed.
"Impossible."
Vincent whispered,
"He died years ago."
Sophia nodded.
"So everyone believes."
She enlarged another recent photograph.
A silver-haired man exiting a private airport in Switzerland.
Alive.
Healthy.
Smiling.
Victor DeLuca.
The broker who had supposedly died during the old mafia war.
Sophia spoke quietly.
"He built both empires."
She pointed to Dominic.
"He funded yours."
Then another file.
"He funded mine."
Another pause.
"And then he destroyed both."
Isabella Finally Breaks
"No!"
Isabella suddenly screamed.
Everyone turned.
Tears streamed down her face.
"You don't understand!"
Dominic looked at her.
"Then explain."
She collapsed into her chair.
"I never wanted Luca hurt."
Silence.
Not because of the confession.
Because of the wording.
She hadn't denied involvement.
She'd only denied wanting the outcome.
Sophia closed her eyes sadly.
"There it is."
Dominic asked quietly,
"There what is?"
"The truth."
The Secret Marriage
Isabella wiped away tears.
"I thought..."
She struggled to breathe.
"I thought they only wanted financial information."
Dominic waited.
"They told me Luca would inherit everything."
She looked directly at Sophia.
"They never said they'd kill him."
Sophia's face remained unreadable.
"Who promised you that?"
Isabella whispered one name.
"Victor."
Dominic's blood seemed to freeze.
Because only three people alive had ever called the supposedly dead man by his first name.
Isabella.
Sophia.
And Dominic himself.
A New Alliance
Sirens echoed outside.
Dominic looked at Sophia for a long moment.
Then asked the question neither of them ever expected to hear.
"Can you help me save my son?"
Sophia answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
Vincent frowned.
"Boss..."
Dominic raised one hand.
"No."
He kept looking at Sophia.
"If everything you've shown me is true..."
He paused.
"...then sixteen years ago we buried the wrong war."
Sophia nodded slowly.
"And the man who started it is finally making his last move."
Dominic extended his hand.
For a heartbeat, Sophia simply stared at it.
Then she reached across the table and shook it.
Not as enemies.
Not yet as friends.
But as two survivors who had finally discovered they had been fighting the wrong battle all along.
May you like
Outside, the rain finally began to stop.
Inside, a different storm was only beginning.
