Chapter 5 — The Warehouse That Was Already a Battlefield

The Brooklyn waterfront looked abandoned.

That was its purpose.

Old rail warehouses leaned toward the river like tired men refusing to fall. Broken floodlights flickered in the fog. Rusted containers stacked like forgotten bones.

But Dominic Salvatore knew better.

Nothing in Victor DeLuca’s world was ever truly empty.

It was only waiting.

The Approach

Three black SUVs cut through the fog without headlights.

Vincent sat in the front passenger seat, radio pressed tight to his ear.

“Perimeter teams in position,” he reported.

“Snipers on rooftops confirmed.”

Marco’s voice came through the encrypted channel.

“Signal interference increasing as we get closer. He’s actively masking the zone.”

Sophia sat in the back of Dominic’s vehicle.

Her laptop glowed across her lap.

Lines of code shifted constantly.

She didn’t look up.

“He knows we’re coming,” she said.

Dominic’s eyes stayed on the warehouse ahead.

“Let him know I’m here.”

Vincent glanced at him.

“Boss… that’s exactly what he wants.”

Dominic replied coldly,

“No.”

“That’s what he expects.”

A pause.

Then—

“I’m going to give him something else.”

Inside the Warehouse — Luca’s First Move

Luca Salvatore moved silently along the edge of the warehouse floor.

The guard footsteps had changed rhythm.

That was the first clue.

Someone was nervous.

Or someone had died.

He crouched near a steel beam and pressed his ear against it.

Voices.

Distant.

One Russian accent.

One American.

And one voice that made his stomach tighten.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

Victor DeLuca.

Luca exhaled slowly.

So it was real.

The man his father thought was dead…

was very much alive.

A guard passed close.

Luca didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

The guard stopped.

Looked down.

Paused.

Then walked away.

Luca waited exactly seven seconds.

Then smiled slightly.

Because he realized something important.

They were not guarding him.

They were guarding time.

Sophia Enters the System

In the SUV, Sophia’s screen flickered violently.

Vincent leaned over.

“What’s happening?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then—

“I’m inside his predictive model.”

Marco’s voice cracked through the radio.

“You got in?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And it’s worse than we thought.”

Dominic turned slightly.

“Explain.”

Sophia’s face tightened.

“He’s not tracking outcomes.”

She swallowed.

“He’s simulating emotional collapse.”

Vincent frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Sophia looked up.

“It means Victor doesn’t care who wins.”

“He cares how people break.”

Silence.

Even Dominic didn’t respond immediately.

The First Explosion

The warehouse doors blew open before Dominic’s convoy even reached the perimeter.

Not from outside.

From inside.

Luca had triggered a fire suppression line.

Foam exploded through the lower corridors.

Confusion erupted among Victor’s men.

“Contain him
