Chapter 5 - The Arraignment

Three days later, the Criminal Courts Building downtown was swarming with media vans, satellite trucks, and packs of aggressive journalists pushing against barricades.

Inside Courtroom 302, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Judge Helen Thorne—a stern, unyielding jurist known for her strict adherence to the law and zero tolerance for elite corruption—sat behind the mahogany bench.

Eleanor Vale was led into the courtroom through the secure side door. She wore a standard Cook County orange jumpsuit. Her hair was pulled back loosely, and without her expensive cosmetics, designer clothes, and protective staff, she looked remarkably mortal—an aging, hardened woman whose empire had crumbled to dust. Yet, as she walked toward the defense table, her dark eyes scanned the gallery until they landed on me and Claire, who sat in the front row.

She didn't look remorseful. She looked murderous.

Her court-appointed defense attorney stood up immediately. “Your Honor, we are moving for a release on a signature bond, or in the alternative, a reduced bail of one hundred thousand dollars, given my client’s advanced age and lack of prior criminal history.”

Judge Thorne didn't even look up from her paperwork. She slowly removed her reading glasses and fixed her piercing gaze on the defense counsel.

“Counsel,” Judge Thorne’s voice rang out flat and cold across the silent courtroom. “Your client is charged with the premeditated kidnapping of a young woman, the falsification of official death records, systemic wire fraud, and the unlawful confinement of a pregnant mother for over two years. Furthermore, my clerk informs me that attempts were made yesterday from a contraband cell phone inside the detention center to intimidate witnesses.”

Eleanor’s defense attorney blinked, glancing nervously back at her. “Your Honor, we have no knowledge of—.”

“I don't expect you to,” Judge Thorne interrupted sharply. She slammed her pen down on the desk. “Bail is denied. The defendant will be held at Cook County Detention Center without bond pending trial.”

Eleanor stood up abruptly, leaning over the podium, her voice shaking with suppressed fury. “You cannot do this! I built this city! My family name—!”

“Your family name doesn't exempt you from federal and state kidnapping statutes, Mrs. Vale,” Judge Thorne said, striking her gavel with a resounding crack. “Take the defendant into custody.”

As the bailiffs grabbed Eleanor by the arms and led her away through the secure exit, she turned her head back toward the gallery one last time, locking her burning eyes on me.

“You will regret this, Daniel,” she whispered fiercely as the heavy metal door swung shut. “You’ll ruin everything your father built.”

“Father built a company,” I said quietly to myself, standing up from the bench and taking Claire’s hand. “We are building a family.”
