Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

The gala ended late into the night.

By the time our chauffeured car pulled up the newly paved, open driveway of our Lake Forest home, Lily had fallen fast asleep against Claire’s shoulder, clutching a small stuffed teddy bear.

There were no gates at the entrance anymore. Just two stone pillars flanked by blooming hydrangeas and soft, welcoming pathway lights.

I carried Lily upstairs to her bedroom, gently laying her down in her crib and pulling a pale yellow blanket—the very same blanket she had been wrapped in the night we reunited in the rain—over her small chest. She stirred for a second, let out a soft sigh, and sank back into deep, peaceful slumber.

Downstairs in the kitchen, Claire was brewing a pot of chamomile tea.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and lavender in her hair.

“You know,” Claire murmured, looking out the kitchen window toward the moonlit garden where the old security checkpoint used to stand, “for a long time, I thought the name Vale meant a cage.”

I turned her around so she was facing me, cupping her face in my hands and looking deep into her dark, beautiful eyes.

“It never was a cage, Claire,” I whispered softly. “It was just waiting for the right queen to open the doors.”

She smiled—a bright, radiant, completely unburdened smile that chased away every ghost of the past.

She leaned up, pressing her lips softly against mine.
