Chapter 8 - The Christmas Eve Miracle

Christmas Eve arrived in Denver with a heavy, swirling snowfall that transformed the city into a white-dusted wonderland.

Damon had filled the penthouse with toys, books, and trees. It no longer looked like a sterile office; it looked like a home.

He had invited the twins to help him decorate the tree. Luke was fascinated by the glass ornaments, his small hands carefully hanging each one. Violet preferred to hide behind the tree, giggling when Damon "couldn't find her."

Cassandra stood in the kitchen, preparing a meal—not the expensive takeout they used to share, but a full, home-cooked feast.

Damon stood behind her, watching her work. "You know, this reminds me of Denver," he said.

Cassandra paused. "Denver was a long time ago."

"It was," he agreed. "But the feelings… they haven't changed."

She turned around, her eyes meeting his. She looked beautiful—not in the polished, magazine-cover way he was used to, but in the raw, honest way that had first made him fall in love with her.

"Damon," she said. "I’m terrified."

"Good," he said, reaching out to take her hand. "So am I."

That evening, they sat by the tree, the fire flickering in the hearth. The twins were asleep in their nursery, the sounds of their breathing the only music in the room.

Damon pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket.

Cassandra stared at it, her breath hitching. "Damon, no."

"I kept it," he said, opening the box to reveal the engagement ring she had thrown at the wall three years earlier. "I kept it in my drawer every single day since you left. I kept it as a reminder of the man I was—a man who was too scared to be vulnerable."

He took her hand, his thumb stroking the back of her palm.

"I don't expect you to take this today," he said. "I don't expect anything but the chance to show you that I’ve changed. But I wanted you to know that I’m here. I’m staying."

Cassandra looked at the ring, then at him. She didn't take it, but she didn't pull her hand away.

"You’re a stubborn man, Damon Prescott," she said, a small, sad smile gracing her lips.

"I’m a father," he corrected. "And a man who finally knows what matters."
