Chapter 3 — The Man Who Didn’t Ask Twice

The building intercom crackled.

Emily froze.

A voice came through.

Low.

Calm.

Controlled in a way that made it sound more dangerous than shouting ever could.

“Margaret Moretti.”

Emily looked at her instantly.

“…you said your son is busy.”

Margaret didn’t answer.

The voice continued.

“We know she is inside.”

Emily felt her stomach drop.

We.

Not I.

Not me.

We.

The building manager’s voice suddenly came through the intercom.

“Uh—sir, this is a residential property—”

A pause.

Then the unknown voice again.

“I am aware.”

Silence.

Then—

“Open the door.”

Not a request.

Not a threat.

A statement of inevitability.

Emily stepped back from the window.

“What did you do?”

Margaret’s lips parted slightly.

But before she could answer—

The apartment doorbell rang.

Once.

Clean.

Precise.

Emily backed away.

“No. No, no, no—this is not happening.”

Biscuit hissed.

The doorbell rang again.

Margaret finally moved.

She walked toward the door.

Emily grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t.”

Margaret looked at her.

And for the first time…

Emily saw something beneath the calm.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

But exhaustion.

Like someone who had lived too long inside consequences.

Margaret gently removed Emily’s hand.

Then signed one sentence.

If they are here… it means he knows.

Emily’s voice dropped.

“Your son?”

Margaret nodded.

The doorbell rang a third time.

Then—

a voice outside.

Closer now.

Not through intercom.

Through the door itself.

“Mom.”

Emily froze.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

May you like

Like a wound reopening without permission.

And she opened the door.
