Chapter 6 — The Night Emily Realized Who She Brought Home
The man turned to Emily again.
“You should not have been involved.”
Emily laughed once.
“Yeah, well, she was freezing outside my diner. So I guess we both made bad decisions.”
A pause.
Margaret’s son studied her.
Then said something that changed everything:
“You are not safe anymore.”
Emily blinked.
“…what?”
He nodded toward the window.
“They know she is with me.”
Margaret’s expression tightened.
Emily looked outside.
The SUVs were still there.
But now—
more had arrived.
She whispered:
“…who are you?”
The man hesitated.
Then finally:
“My name is Victor Moretti.”
Emily froze.
The name clicked somewhere deep.
She had heard it before.
Not in real life.
On news snippets.
On financial reports.
On rumors people whispered without looking directly at screens.
Victor Moretti.
Not businessman.
Not politician.
Not criminal.
Something worse.
Something in between all three.
Emily slowly turned to Margaret.
“You’re his… mom.”
Margaret nodded.
Victor stepped closer.
“And I owe her my life more times than I can count.”
A pause.
“But I failed to be present when she needed me.”
Silence fell again.
Snow hit the window harder now.
Emily’s apartment suddenly felt too small for reality.
Victor looked at Margaret.
“I am not asking permission this time.”
Margaret held his gaze.
And for the first time all night—
she didn’t resist.
She simply looked tired.
Victor softened his voice.
“Come home, Mom.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
A long silence.
Then—
she nodded.
Emily didn’t know why it hurt to watch.
But it did.
Because she realized something:
Sometimes being saved…
still feels like losing something.
Margaret turned to Emily.
Her hands moved slowly.
You saved me.
Emily shook her head.
“I just opened a door.”
Margaret smiled faintly.
That is enough.
Victor stepped forward.
He pulled something from his coat.
A card.
A number.
A contact.
He placed it in Emily’s hand.
“If you ever need anything…”
Emily almost laughed.
“I don’t think I operate in your world.”
Victor looked at her.
“You already did.”
He paused.
