Chapter 6 - The Paternity Scandal

Mark Vance laid a series of high-resolution surveillance photos and banking statements on the wooden kitchen counter.

"His real name is Marcus 'Shark' Brody," Mark explained, pointing to a photo of a heavily tattooed man in his late thirties exiting a private casino in Biloxi. "He’s a mid-level manager for an illegal sports betting syndicate operating out of South Georgia."

Madeline looked at the photos in shock. "And his connection to Cynthia?"

"Cynthia didn't just work for Jeffrey," Mark revealed, sliding a DNA swab requisition order across the counter. "She was Marcus Brody’s girlfriend before she ever applied for the secretarial job at Vance Logistics. Three years ago, Brody racked up over nine hundred thousand dollars in underground gambling debts."

Madeline’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure realization. "So Cynthia took the job at Vance Logistics specifically to target Jeffrey?"

"Exactly," Mark confirmed. "She seduced Jeffrey, moved into your home the moment you left for London, and convinced him that her newborn baby, Austin, was his son. Meanwhile, she was siphoning company funds directly into Brody’s offshore accounts to pay off his syndicate debts."

"Does Jeffrey know?" Madeline asked, a cold, vengeful smile creeping onto her lips.

"Jeffrey believes with absolute, blind certainty that Austin is his biological heir—the 'perfect, healthy son' he wanted to replace Liam with," Mark said. "In fact, his entire defense strategy for the upcoming custody hearing relies on proving he provides a stable, loving two-parent home with Cynthia and Austin."

Madeline picked up the DNA requisition order. "Under Georgia probate law, can we compel a court-ordered paternity test for Austin as part of the asset fraud investigation?"

"We can," Mark smiled coldly. "And Judge Sterling just signed the order thirty minutes ago. The court technician is at the holding facility swab testing Cynthia right now."

Forty-eight hours later, in a private consultation room at the Fulton County Judicial Center, Jeffrey sat across from his legal counsel, Harold Vance.

Jeffrey was wearing a wrinkled grey jumpsuit, his face gaunt and unshaven. "Harold, you have to get me out on bail! My mother is in the infirmary, Cynthia is in the women's wing, and Madeline is liquidating my company!"

"Jeffrey, calm down," Harold said, rubbing his temples. "We still have the custody hearing tomorrow. If we can prove that Madeline is an unfit, vindictive mother trying to destroy your family, the judge might grant joint custody, which gives us leverage to unfreeze your personal trust accounts."

The door opened, and Mark Vance walked in, accompanied by a court officer. Mark didn't say a word. He simply laid a sealed white envelope bearing the seal of the Georgia Forensic Genetics Laboratory onto the metal table.

"What is that?" Jeffrey snapped.

"That," Mark said calmly, "is the court-ordered paternity report for little Austin."

Jeffrey smirked, adjusting his posture. "So what? You wasted court money testing my boy? Austin is my son! He looks just like me!"

Harold Vance opened the envelope, scanned the official findings on the first page, and suddenly went completely motionless.

"Harold?" Jeffrey asked, his smile fading. "What does it say?"

Harold looked at Jeffrey with an expression of profound, pitying disgust. "Jeffrey... the probability of your biological paternity regarding the child, Austin Miller... is zero percent."

The room seemed to freeze.

"What?" Jeffrey whispered, his voice cracking. "No... that's a mistake! Madeline paid them off!"

"The secondary paternal markers," Mark Vance read directly from his own copy, "match ninety-nine point nine percent with Marcus Brody—a convicted felon currently wanted by federal authorities for racketeering."

Mark leaned over the table, looking directly into Jeffrey’s hollow, shattered eyes.

"She didn't love you, Jeffrey. She didn't want your family. She used your vanity to ruin your wife, starve your legitimate son, and steal two million dollars from your company to pay off her real lover's mob debts."

Jeffrey let out a choked, pathetic gasp, collapsing forward onto the metal table, pressing his face into his arms as heavy, hysterical sobs tore through his chest.
