Chapter 7 - The Trial of Reckoning

The Fulton County Family Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity on the morning of the final custody and criminal preliminary hearing.
Reporters from major television networks filled the gallery, their cameras flashing as Madeline walked down the center aisle. She wore an elegant dark blue dress, holding her head high. Beside her walked Mark Vance, while in the front row sat Dr. Sarah Lin and Dr. Marcus Evans, ready to testify.
At the defense table sat Jeffrey, flanked by two armed guards. He looked like a broken shell of a man, his eyes fixed blankly on the wooden desk before him. Cynthia sat three seats down, wearing an orange jumpsuit, refusing to look at him.
Judge Evelyn Sterling slammed her gavel down, bringing the noisy courtroom to instant silence.
"This court is now in session regarding the matter of Vance v. Vance," Judge Sterling announced, her sharp eyes scanning the room. "We are here to determine final legal and physical custody of the minor child, Liam Vance, as well as consider grand jury indictments for child cruelty and corporate fraud."
Jeffrey’s attorney stood up, his voice lacking any of its former confidence. "Your Honor... my client wishes to enter a statement for the court."
"Proceed," Judge Sterling said coldly.
Jeffrey stood up slowly, his chains clinking loudly in the quiet room. He looked over at Madeline, his voice trembling violently.
"Madeline... I... I was blind," Jeffrey sobbed, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "Cynthia manipulated me... my mother pushed me... I didn't know what they were doing to Liam! I swear to God I didn't know!"
Madeline stood up from the prosecution table. She didn't raise her voice. She simply picked up a remote control and pointed it at the court’s high-definition projection screen.
"Your Honor," Madeline said clearly, "I request permission to play Exhibit C—a video recorded six weeks ago by the internal security system inside the main hallway."
"Permission granted," Judge Sterling ruled.
The video played on the large screen for the entire courtroom to see:
The video showed Jeffrey standing in the hallway outside the pantry. Little Liam’s small, thin hand was reaching out through the bottom wooden slats of the door, crying softly. Jeffrey didn't open the door. Instead, he kicked Liam’s tiny hand away with his leather shoe, saying clearly: “Stop scratching the wood, Liam. You’re annoying Cynthia.”
Gasps of horror echoed through the gallery. Several news reporters covered their mouths in disgust.
Judge Sterling’s face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated judicial fury. She slammed her gavel down with a crack that sounded like a gunshot.
"Enough!" Judge Sterling barked, pointing her finger directly at Jeffrey. "Mr. Vance, your statement is not only rejected, it is an insult to the intelligence of this court!"
She turned to the court clerk, her voice stern and absolute.
"Order of the Court: Sole physical and legal custody of Liam Vance is permanently awarded to Madeline Vance. The defendant, Jeffrey Vance, is granted zero visitation rights—now or at any point in the future."
Judge Sterling turned her attention to the criminal prosecutor.
"Furthermore, based on the undisputed medical evidence presented by Dr. Evans and the overwhelming digital record, I am binding Jeffrey Vance, Noelle Vance, and Cynthia Miller over for immediate criminal trial on charges of felony child cruelty, criminal conspiracy, and grand larceny. Bail is denied for all three defendants!"
The courtroom erupted into thunderous cheers and applause from the gallery.

As the U.S. Marshals grabbed Jeffrey and pulled him toward the holding cell doors, he screamed wildly over his shoulder: "Madeline! Please! Forgive me! Madeline!"
Madeline didn't look at him. She turned her back on her ex-husband, gathered her legal papers, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
