Chapter 3 - What Lies Beneath

By two o'clock in the morning, the pain medication Dr. Carter had given me had dulled the fiery agony in my ribs to a heavy, throbbing ache. But sleep was impossible.

The small television mounted in the corner of my private room was muted, but the news banner rolling across the bottom of the local Cleveland station told the story that was unfolding seven miles away at 1412 Maple Street.

BREAKING NEWS: LARGE POLICE AND FBI PRESENCE AT LAKEWOOD HOME. HAZMAT AND FORENSIC UNITS DEPLOYED TO SUBURBAN RESIDENCE.

Images of my childhood home flashed across the screen. Blue and red lights painted the snow-covered lawn in vivid, violent hues. White forensic tents had been erected over the driveway, and heavily armed SWAT officers were standing guard along the perimeter fence I had helped my father paint two summers ago.

The door to my room opened quietly.

Dana Mitchell walked in, carrying two paper cups of hot tea. She looked exhausted; deep purple circles sagged beneath her eyes, but her expression was fierce and protective.

"You should be resting, Claire," she said, pulling a chair up to the bedside and handing me one of the cups.

"I can't," I said, pointing a trembling hand toward the muted television. "Is it true? What they’re showing on the news?"

Dana took a slow sip of her tea, settling her gaze on me with complete honesty. "Your father isn't who you thought he was, Claire. Or rather... he’s much worse than you ever dared to imagine."

"What did they find?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"They found the waterproof case," Dana revealed softly. "The hard drives contained detailed financial ledgers, land lease documents, and encrypted files. Arthur Walsh wasn't just a suburban real estate broker. For fifteen years, he used his access to abandoned properties, foreclosures, and commercial real estate across Northern Ohio to establish an off-the-books network for illegal land development, tax fraud, and far darker criminal enterprises."

"And Sarah Jenkins?" I choked out. "The blue folders?"

Dana hesitated, a shadow passing over her face. "The folders contained personal records, surveillance photos, and legal documents belonging to young women who had been listed as missing persons across three counties over the past decade. The FBI is currently searching several commercial properties registered to your father’s shell corporations."

I covered my face with my free hand, my chest heaving. "And my mom? Did she know?"

Dana’s tone grew darker. "Your mother is currently refusing to speak without an attorney. But from what officers found in the home... Susan Walsh wasn't just a passive bystander. She maintained the accounts. She managed the physical keys. She helped your father cover up the domestic violence in that house for years to ensure the family business remained protected."

"And Mia?" I asked, terror gripping my heart. "What happens to Mia?"

"Mia is sixteen," Dana explained gently. "She committed a severe physical assault against you today. But given the environment she was raised in—the extreme psychological conditioning, the domestic abuse, and the criminal enterprise operating in her home—she is being treated as both a suspect and a victim. She is currently in a secure juvenile shelter, receiving immediate psychiatric care."

Dana reached out, taking my hand in hers.

"The life you knew, Claire—the lie your parents built on Maple Street—is completely over. But your life... your real life... starts right now."
