Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Matriarch

The interrogation room at the Federal Building in downtown Cleveland was sterile, cold, and smelled faintly of industrial floor cleaner.

I sat in my wheelchair on one side of the heavy metal table, flanked by Agent Brody and Elena Vance. On the other side sat my mother.

Without her immaculate makeup, her tailored suburban dresses, and her perfectly styled hair, Susan Walsh looked ancient. Her skin was sallow, deep hollows carved beneath her cheekbones, and her hands trembled slightly in the silver handcuffs attached to the waist belt she wore.

When the door clicked shut, she looked up at me. There were no tears in her eyes. No maternal warmth. Only a desperate, calculating hunger.

"Claire," she whispered, her voice raspy. "Look at what you’ve done to us."

A sharp surge of fury, hot and clean, burned away the last remnants of my fear. "I didn't break my own ribs, Mom. I didn't hide hard drives behind the coal chute. And I didn't help a monster ruin girls' lives for fifteen years."

Susan let out a bitter, raspy laugh. "A monster? You think Arthur was the monster?"

Agent Brody leaned forward. "Mrs. Walsh, stay focused on the terms of your proffer agreement."

Susan ignored him, fixing her hollow gaze entirely on me. "You think Arthur ran that business, Claire? Arthur was a coward. He was a small-time salesman who couldn't balance a checkbook without throwing a tantrum. Who do you think managed the properties? Who do you think found the buyers? Who do you think negotiated the off-the-books leases for those warehouses?"

My stomach turned to lead. "You..."

"I built that empire," Susan spat out, a sick, twisted pride gleaming in her sunken eyes. "Every dollar that paid for your private school, your clothes, your car, came from my ledger. Arthur was just the heavy hand. He kept order at home. He kept you and Mia disciplined."

"Disciplined?" I yelled, my voice breaking as pain flared in my ribs. "He let Mia beat me! He beat us both!"

"Mia was unstable!" Susan snapped back, leaning over the table as far as her chains allowed. "Mia inherited her uncle’s madness! She was dangerous from the day she turned twelve! I tried to protect you, Claire! I let Arthur handle Mia so she wouldn't kill you in your sleep!"

"You didn't protect anyone!" I shouted, standing up from my wheelchair despite the burning pain, placing my uninjured palm flat on the cold table. "You used Mia’s violence as an excuse to keep us terrified! You kept us locked in that house so we would never look behind the basement freezer!"

Susan stared at me, shocked by the force of my defiance. The frail, obedient daughter she had manipulated for eighteen years was gone.

"Where is the secondary key, Susan?" Elena Vance interrupted coldly, cutting through the confrontation. "You promised location data for the offshore servers in exchange for this meeting."

Susan swallowed hard, her arrogant posture crumbling under my furious stare. "It’s... it’s in the family cabin in Pennsylvania. Under the floorboards in the master bedroom. The access codes for the Swiss accounts are there too."

Elena nodded to Agent Brody, who immediately stepped out of the room to relay the information to the recovery team.

I looked down at my mother one last time.

"You told me in the hospital that Mia was dramatic," I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You told me we would handle it at home. Well, home is gone, Mom. And you are going to die in a federal prison."

I turned my wheelchair around and pushed myself out of the room, leaving Susan Walsh alone in the cold silver light.
