Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

By summer, Lucy’s life was filled with the vibrant energy of a happy, thriving child.

She had enrolled in a top-rated public elementary school in Austin, where she was at the top of her class in art and science, surrounded by a close-knit group of friends who filled their home with laughter every weekend.

Javier’s book, Behind the Velvet Curtain: Exposing Institutional Silence, had become an international bestseller, leading to the passage of "Lucy’s Law"—federal legislation mandating independent third-party monitoring of security camera networks in all educational facilities nationwide.

On a warm July evening, Javier and Lucy stood on the pier of Lake Travis, watching the sun dip below the horizon, turning the water into liquid gold.

A cool evening breeze rustled through the cypress trees along the shore.

Lucy ran along the wooden dock, laughing as she flew a bright red kite high into the clear sky, her laughter carrying over the water like a sweet song.

Javier stood at the edge of the pier, his hands in his pockets, watching his daughter soar.

The memories of that dark night in Collins’s office—the terrifying bruises, the threats of losing custody, the desperate midnight raid in the rain—felt like a lifetime ago.

Lucy ran back to him, taking his hand, pulling him toward the edge of the dock as the red kite danced gracefully against the golden clouds.

"Look how high it goes, Dad!" Lucy cheered, her face illuminated by the setting sun.

Javier looked up at the kite, then down into the bright, confident eyes of his daughter.

He had fought the most powerful men in the state, tore down a corrupt empire, and faced the darkest corners of human cruelty. And in doing so, he had given his daughter something that no money, power, or institutional influence could ever buy or take away:

A life of unconditional love, unyielding safety, and an unbroken horizon.

"It’s beautiful, Lucy," Javier smiled, pulling her close as the stars began to shine over the Texas sky. "It’s going as high as it wants."
