Chapter 7 - THE GALA OF SHADOWS

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering crystal, black-tie tuxedos, and silk gowns.

Over five hundred of the city’s most prominent political and business figures were in attendance for the annual Rowan Foundation Gala.

Leah looked stunning. She wore an elegant, floor-length emerald green gown that Calder had personally ordered for her from a Parisian designer. Her hair was swept up in a classic chignon, and for the first time in her life, she walked with the quiet, absolute confidence of a woman who had earned her place at the highest table.

Calder stood beside her in a bespoke tuxedo, his hand resting gently against the small of her back.

"You look breathtaking, Leah," Calder whispered, his gray eyes shining with an unmistakable affection that made Leah’s heart flutter.

"Thank you, Calder," Leah smiled softly, adjusting her microphone wire behind her ear. "I’m just nervous about the presentation."

"You're going to be brilliant," Calder assured her, kissing her cheek gently. "Just read the numbers you built."

In the VIP holding room near the side of the stage, Julianna Vance watched them through the cracked door, her hands clenching her wine glass so tightly the glass nearly cracked.

At 9:00 PM, the Mayor of the city took the podium.

"And now, ladies and gentlemen," the Mayor announced into the microphone, "it is my distinct honor to introduce the woman who has revolutionized our city's family assistance programs—Miss Leah Mercer!"

Applause echoed through the cavernous ballroom.

Leah walked up the stairs to the stage, taking her place behind the podium. She loaded her presentation file from the encrypted Foundation tablet onto the main projector screens.

She spoke with passion, eloquence, and absolute mastery over her subject, showing graphs of families saved, children housed, and communities transformed.

"And now," Leah said, smiling at the audience, "with the authorization of Chairman Calder Rowan, I will execute the digital release of the ten-million-dollar Municipal Childcare Endowment."

She tapped the screen on the podium tablet.

A large progress bar appeared on the massive screens behind her:

TRANSFER IN PROGRESS... DESTINATION ACCOUNT: [ROUTING ERROR – UNVERIFIED OFFSHORE HOLDING #882-PANAMA]

A sharp gasp rippled through the audience!

Sitting in the front row, Harrison Vance stared at the screen in utter horror.

Julianna Vance immediately stood up from her table, her voice ringing out across the quiet room with theatrical, hysterical fury.

"STOP THE TRANSFER!" Julianna shrieked, pointing at Leah on stage. "SECURITY! SHE'S ROUTING THE FOUNDATION FUNDS TO AN OFFSHORE BANK ACCOUNT! SHE'S STEALING THE TEN MILLION DOLLARS!"
