Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

The communications bunker beneath the safehouse was a cold, high-tech command center lit by dozens of server racks and monitors displaying encrypted data streams.

When Roman and Savannah kicked open the heavy steel door, they found an older man sitting comfortably in Roman’s leather command chair, casually spinning a silver fountain pen between his fingers.

Salvatore Caruso looked every bit the Chicago mob patriarch: silver hair slicked back, a tailored gray wool suit that hadn't caught a speck of dust, and eyes that held decades of calculated cruelty. Two heavily armed guards stood on either side of him, their rifles pointed directly at the doorway.

"Roman," Salvatore said smoothly, a thin, mocking smile stretching across his lips. "I must hand it to you. You built a very impressive cage. Too bad your little pet waitress let the wolf right through the back door."

Roman didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw his gun immediately. He simply stepped into the room, placing Savannah safely behind him, his massive frame radiating an aura of violence so dense it made the air heavy.

"You’re a long way from Chicago, Salvatore," Roman said, his voice dropping into a lethal purr. "And your men outside are currently bleeding out on my lawn. You didn't come here to negotiate a merger."

"Negotiations ended the moment you humiliated my daughter in front of half the political elite in Washington," Salvatore snarled, his smile vanishing, replaced by a mask of pure, murderous hatred. "You think you can cancel a billion-dollar alliance, toss my flesh and blood aside like a broken toy, and walk away? The syndicate owns the ports, Roman. We own the judges. We own your future."

"You did own them," Roman corrected softly.

Salvatore frowned. "What did you say?"

At that exact moment, the massive wall-mounted monitors in the bunker flickered. The camera feeds shifted from the burning safehouse perimeter to federal courtrooms, bank vaults, and corporate headquarters across three states.

"Check your encrypted tablet, Salvatore," Roman said, a cold, predatory smirk touching the corners of his mouth.

Salvatore’s hand twitched. He picked up the secure satellite tablet resting on the desk, swiped the screen, and watched as line after line of offshore account balances dropped to zero.

"What... what is this?" Salvatore stammered, his color draining rapidly. "The Cayman accounts... the Swiss holdings... they’re being frozen by federal receivers!"

"While you were busy sending your little tactical team to my safehouse," Roman said calmly, stepping closer while Salvatore’s guards hesitated, uncertain whether to shoot or check their own comms, "my legal and financial teams—backed by the very federal task force Vance runs—were executing a comprehensive seizure of every shell company your family has operated for the last twenty years. The RICO indictments were signed three hours ago."

Salvatore leaped to his feet, his face purple with rage. "You betrayed the council! You ratted out the syndicate to the Feds?!"

"I didn't rat out the syndicate," Roman said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet finality. "I replaced it."

Before Salvatore could raise his pistol, one of his own guards—a man standing to his left—suddenly shifted his weapon, pressing the barrel directly against Salvatore’s ribs.

Salvatore gasped, looking at his own man in absolute betrayal. "Dante? What are you doing?"

Dante slowly pulled down his tactical mask, revealing his scarred, impassive face. "Mr. Vale pays better, Salvatore. And unlike the Chicago council, he honors his family."

Roman looked over his shoulder at Savannah, reaching out his left hand to take hers. Her fingers slid into his, warm, steady, and completely unafraid.

"Take him to the federal holding cells," Roman ordered Dante, not breaking eye contact with the defeated Chicago patriarch. "And make sure Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance gets his paperwork before breakfast."
