Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Elena Vance

By seven in the morning, the snow had covered the estate in a thick, suffocating blanket. Adrian sat in his dining room, sipping black coffee, while Marcus placed a thick leather binder beside his plate.

"Her real name isn't Emma Reed," Marcus began, taking a step back and folding his hands behind his back.

Adrian stopped his cup halfway to his mouth. He set it down slowly. "Go on."

"Her birth name is Elena Vance," Marcus revealed. "Daughter of Arthur Vance."

The name struck the room like a physical blow. Adrian’s eyes narrowed into sharp, lethal slits.

Arthur Vance had been one of the most powerful corporate lawyers in the Midwest—a man who managed the hidden assets, trusts, and shell companies for Chicago’s wealthiest families, including Adrian’s own legal entities, before he vanished five years ago under a cloud of federal indictments and alleged embezzlement. Vance had died in a private plane crash off the coast of Lake Michigan six months after disappearing, leaving behind a mountain of debt and angry creditors.

"Arthur Vance had a daughter?" Adrian asked, his mind piecing together the timeline.

"A daughter who was kept entirely out of the public eye," Marcus explained. "She was studying art history in Paris when her father collapsed financially. When he died, the debts fell onto his estate, but certain... informal creditors believed Arthur had stashed fifty million dollars in a blind trust before his death. They assumed his daughter knew where the money was."

Adrian leaned forward, his elbows resting on the polished table. "Who were the creditors?"

Marcus hesitated slightly before pulling a photograph from the folder. "Julian Thorne."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. Julian Thorne was a predatory financier who operated in the grey space between corporate buyouts and high-interest extortion. He was ruthless, politically connected, and spent millions maintaining a polished public image while using private enforcement teams to collect on disputed debts.

"Thorne bought up Arthur Vance’s defaulted notes," Marcus continued. "When Elena returned to Chicago three years ago—pregnant, broke, and using the alias Emma Reed—Thorne’s men tracked her down. She’s been paying off a fraudulent 'inherited debt' ever since. She works two cleaning jobs, lives on pennies, and gives almost every dollar to a courier sent by Thorne’s agency."

"And the bruises?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"Thorne’s chief enforcer, a man named Victor Glass, visits her once a month to remind her of her obligations," Marcus said grimly. "He operates out of a private firm in Lake Forest. The house she cleaned yesterday morning? It belongs to Glass."

Adrian picked up his coffee cup again, holding it between his hands. The heat seeped into his palms, but inside, his blood was ice cold.

Emma Reed wasn't just a maid who had collapsed from exhaustion. She was the daughter of the man who had structured the very foundations of Adrian Mercer's financial network. Arthur Vance had been loyal to Adrian's father, taking secrets to his grave. And now, Arthur’s daughter was being bled dry by a vulture in a tailored suit inside Adrian's own city.

"Boss," Marcus said quietly. "If we intervene with Julian Thorne, it won't be quiet. Thorne has two city councilmen in his pocket and ties to federal prosecutors. Touching Victor Glass will start a territorial dispute."

Adrian took a slow sip of his coffee. He thought of the three-year-old child who had knocked on his door at midnight, trusting him blindly simply because he was tall enough to reach the light switch.

"Call Dr. Bennett," Adrian said calmly. "Tell her to move Emma and her daughter up to the guest suite on the second floor. The staff wing is too cold."

"And Julian Thorne?" Marcus asked.

Adrian looked out at the falling snow. "Tell Victor Glass I want to see him. Today."
