Chapter 8 - The Viper's Trap

The following morning, thirty of Chicago's top journalists were escorted through the iron gates of the Mercer estate into the grand ballroom. Cameras were set up, microphones clustered on a wooden podium, and the air crackled with intense anticipation.
Julian Thorne sat in his private limousine parked two blocks away, watching the live stream on his tablet, a triumphant smirk resting on his lips. "Watch this, Victor," Julian chuckled to his battered enforcer beside him. "Mercer is going to announce her resignation or throw her to the wolves to save his stock price."
Inside the ballroom, the doors opened.
Adrian Mercer walked up to the podium, dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit. He looked formidable, calm, and utterly in control.
Beside him walked Elena Vance. She wore a simple, elegant dark blue suit, her hair styled neatly, holding her head high.
The room erupted into shouting reporters and flashing camera lights.
"Mr. Mercer! Is it true Elena Vance is hiding fifty million dollars in stolen funds in your estate?"
"Mrs. Vance, are you facing federal charges?"
Adrian raised one single hand. The room fell dead silent instantly.
"Three years ago," Adrian began, his deep voice carrying clearly through every camera microphone, "Elena Vance was targeted by an illegal extortion syndicate operating within this city. Following the tragic death of her father, fraudulent debt papers were produced to force her into debt slavery."
The reporters gasped, whispering frantically.
"She worked sixteen hours a day, under an assumed name, to protect her three-year-old daughter from threats of violence," Adrian continued, his eyes cold as steel as he looked directly into the lead camera lens—directly into Julian Thorne's eyes. "Yesterday, those same extortionists came to my house to threaten her again. They left empty-handed."
A reporter stood up quickly. "Mr. Mercer! Are you denying the financial claims made by Julian Thorne's agency?"
"I am not denying them," Adrian replied smoothly. "I am exposing them."
Adrian gestured to Marcus, who pressed a button on a remote control. A giant projection screen behind the podium flickered to life, displaying detailed bank records, wire transfers, and audio recordings.
"For the past forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors have been reviewing the complete financial ledger of Julian Thorne," Adrian revealed calmly. "The evidence displayed behind me proves that Mr. Thorne has operated an illegal racketeering ring, extorting over twenty families across Illinois using forged debt notes."
On the limousine screen two blocks away, Julian Thorne's face turned completely white. His cigar slipped from his fingers, falling onto the leather floorboard.
"What... what is this?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with terror. "Where did he get those files?!"
On the broadcast screen, Adrian looked directly into the camera lens with a cold, ruthless smile.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Adrian announced, "warrants have been issued for the immediate arrest of Julian Thorne, Victor Glass, and four of their associates for felony extortion, corporate fraud, and criminal conspiracy."
Outside Julian Thorne's limousine, heavy black SUVs suddenly slammed to a halt, blocking the road. Federal agents clad in tactical gear spilled out, weapons drawn, surrounding the limousine.

"JULIAN THORNE! STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS UP!"
Julian stared at his tablet in absolute, helpless horror as federal officers smashed his driver's side window open. On the screen, Adrian Mercer was stepping away from the podium, wrapping a protective arm around Elena Vance's waist as they walked off the stage together into absolute victory.
