Chapter 12 - The Shadow of Apex

Inside the glass-walled study adjacent to the private dining room, the glowing screens of three laptops illuminated the dark mahogany desk.

Julian pulled up the legal filing, displaying the complex corporate architecture of Apex Vanguard.

"Victor Sterling didn't pull this out of thin air," Grant observed, leaning over Nora’s shoulder, his eyes scanning the ledger lines with professional expertise. "Look at the internal audit timestamps attached to Exhibit C. These financial statements were pulled directly from our internal server on June 14th of last year. Someone gave him our master access keys."

"June 14th?" Elise frowned, stepping closer. "That was the night of the mid-year charity gala at the estate. The server room was locked."

"It wasn't locked to family," Marcus muttered, his face darkening. "Julian, who had super-admin access to the Hale database on that date?"

Julian typed rapidly, pulling the digital access logs from the secure vault.

A name flashed on the screen: Cynthia Hale.

The room went dead silent.

Cynthia was Arthur’s second ex-wife—Grant and Elise’s mother—who had been quietly bought out of her marital shares two years ago and instructed to live comfortably in Paris after attempting to sabotage Nora’s initial takeover of the logistics division.

"Mother..." Elise whispered, her voice laced with disappointment rather than shock. "She didn't stay in Paris, did she?"

"No," Julian confirmed, pulling up recent travel manifests. "She landed in New York three weeks ago. She’s been meeting with Victor Sterling’s legal counsel at the St. Regis hotel every Tuesday."

Nora stood by the window, looking out over the glittering grid of the city below. The wind howled softly against the reinforced glass.

"She didn't just sell the data for money," Nora analyzed smoothly. "Cynthia wants revenge. She believes that if Apex Vanguard bankrupts Northbridge, the original court settlement from her divorce five years ago will be invalidated, allowing her to claim fifty percent of the underlying land equity."

"She’s willing to burn down everything we built just to get a piece of the ashes," Grant said, slamming his fist gently onto the desk. "Nora, if the court executes that freeze order at midnight, my automated freight lines stop running by 6:00 AM. Five hundred drivers lose their shifts tomorrow morning."

"And my design contracts with the city's trade center will be revoked," Elise added, her jaw clenching. "I have forty employees depending on those payroll accounts."

Nora turned around, her face an unreadable mask of cold, tactical brilliance. The hesitation that once haunted her when dealing with her fragmented family had vanished completely.

"They think they’re trapping the old Hale family," Nora said, her voice resonant and smooth. "They think we’ll turn on each other, blame Dad, and start filing cross-lawsuits to save our individual skin."

She looked at Grant, Marcus, and Elise, a slow, confident smile touching her lips.

"We have four hours until midnight. Grant, call your bank syndicate in Chicago. Marcus, take Julian and secure the physical server backups from the downtown vault. Elise, contact your media directors."

"What are you going to do, Nora?" Marcus asked.

"I’m going to have late-night drinks with Victor Sterling," Nora replied, smoothing her dress. "And I’m going to make him realize he bought a hollow shell."
