Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps

The following Thursday morning, exactly one week after the coffee attack, the sun broke through a heavy downpour over the federal courthouse in downtown Miami. Skylar sat in Marcus Sterling’s office, watching a live digital feed provided by the State Attorney’s investigator.

Derek had finally lost his patience. Believing that Skylar was still hiding out at her parents' house in Orlando, he had decided to violate the emergency protective order to return to the Edgewater apartment. He needed to get his physical documents, his backup clothing, and more importantly, he wanted to change the digital passwords on her main corporate router to lock her out of her own administrative system before she discovered the full extent of the diverted funds.

The security footage from the fourteenth-floor hallway showed Derek walking down the carpeted corridor, dressed in his standard navy suit, looking entirely unbothered. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his key, and slid it into the lock of Unit 1402.

The key turned, but the bolt didn't move. Skylar had changed the electronic smart-locks forty-eight hours ago.

Derek frowned, jiggling the handle violently. He knocked loudly on the heavy oak door. "Skylar! Open the door! I know you're in there! Stop playing these childish games! I’m here to get my things, and if you don't open this door right now, I’m calling the police to report you for illegal lock-out!"

The elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open with a soft chime.

Four plainclothes federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation division and the FBI’s white-collar crime task force stepped onto the carpet. They were accompanied by two uniformed Miami-Dade police officers.

Derek spun around, his face instantly turning pale as he recognized the badges pinned to their lapels.

"Derek Vance?" the lead federal agent asked, producing a document stamped with the seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

"Yes... what is this?" Derek stammered, his smooth salesman confidence vanishing in an instant. "There’s a misunderstanding here. My wife filed a false domestic report against me last week because we had an argument in the kitchen—"

"We aren't here for the domestic battery charge, Mr. Vance," the agent interrupted, his voice dropping like an anvil. "That’s being handled by the state. We are here to execute a federal arrest warrant for eighteen counts of wire fraud, twelve counts of aggravated identity theft, and four counts of conspiracy to engage in interstate money laundering."

Derek stared at the agent, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Wire fraud? Identity theft? You have the wrong person. I’m an insurance broker—"

"Turn around and place your hands behind your back," the officer commanded, stepping forward with a set of steel handcuffs.

The metallic click of the cuffs echoing through the quiet hallway was captured perfectly by the security camera. At that exact moment, twenty miles away in Hialeah, a second federal tactical unit was breaching the front door of Suzanne’s stucco house, seizing her laptop, her banking records, and arresting her as a primary co-conspirator in the fraudulent shell company scheme.

Skylar watched the screen in Marcus’s office as her husband was led away in chains, his head bowed, his expensive suit looking ridiculous against the cold steel of the handcuffs. She didn't feel a surge of triumph. She didn't feel a rush of malice. She simply exhaled, a deep, professional sense of completion settling into her chest. The liability had been successfully liquidated.
