Chapter 10 - The Horizon at Bodega Bay

Ten years after the wedding at the vineyard.
The summer sun was setting over Bodega Bay, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and violet.
On the wrap-around porch of the cedar house, a long wooden table was set for dinner.
Julian sat on the porch swing, sipping a glass of wine, watching our five-year-old son, Leo, building a wooden toy fort on the deck floor.
Down on the green lawn near the bluff, ten-year-old Hope—now a tall, brilliant girl with bright eyes and a quick smile—was throwing a frisbee for our two golden retrievers.
I walked out onto the porch carrying a tray of fresh lemonade, wearing a soft white linen dress that blew gently in the evening ocean breeze.
Julian stood up from the swing, stepping over to wrap his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder as we watched our children play.
"What are you thinking about, beautiful?" Julian whispered, kissing my cheek.
"I was thinking about that quiet Saturday night in Napa," I said softly, leaning back against his warm chest.
"Does it still hurt?" Julian asked gently.
"No," I smiled, turning my head to look into his kind hazel eyes. "It doesn't hurt at all. Because if that door had never been locked, I never would have found my true strength. I never would have built the foundation, I never would have met you, and I wouldn't have this beautiful, perfect life."
Down on the lawn, Hope caught the frisbee, holding it high in the air as she looked up toward the porch.
"Mommy! Julian! Look! I caught it!" Hope shouted, her bright, happy laugh floating up on the ocean breeze.
"Great catch, sweetheart!" Julian called back, waving to her.
I looked out across the vast, sparkling ocean stretching into the infinite horizon.
The gold crystal chandeliers of the vineyard had long since shattered into dust. The ten-million-dollar deal had vanished like smoke.
In their place remained the only things that truly mattered: truth, love, justice, and a family built on an unbreakable foundation.

I reached up, taking Julian's hand in mine, feeling the warm gold band on my finger as we watched the sun dip peacefully below the horizon.
I was finally, completely, home.
