Chapter 4 - The ER and the Tape

The emergency room at St. Jude’s Hospital was bright, sterile, and loud.

Within minutes of our arrival, a pediatric trauma team rushed Lily into an examination bay. They wrapped her in warm-air blankets, attached continuous core-temperature monitors to her small body, and started a warm IV line to combat the hypothermia.

Dr. Aris, a sharp-eyed pediatric specialist, checked Lily’s fingertips, her lip tissue, and her core temp readings.

"Core body temperature was 94.1 when you walked through those doors, Mr. Miller," Dr. Aris said, her expression grave as she checked Lily’s chart. "That is moderate-to-severe hypothermia. Another fifteen minutes in that cold environment, and her heart rhythm would have become dangerously erratic. You got her out just in time."

I sat beside Lily’s bed, holding her hand, pressing it against my cheek to warm it with my breath. "She told me her grandmother put her in there as punishment."

Dr. Aris’s head snapped toward me, her eyes widening in horror. "Her grandmother?"

"Yes," I said. "And I recorded her admitting it."

Before Dr. Aris could respond, two uniformed officers from the city police department knocked on the glass partition of the ER room, followed closely by a woman in a dark suit carrying a leather briefcase—Detective Rachel Croft from the Major Crimes Unit.

"Mark Miller?" Detective Croft asked, stepping into the room.

"Yes," I said, standing up, though I kept my hand firmly linked with Lily’s.

"I'm Detective Croft. Our units responded to your 911 call at the Elmcrest address," she said, her voice measured and professional. "We have secured the property. Evelyn Vance was taken into custody at the scene after attempting to flee in her vehicle."

Relief washed over me like a wave of warm water, but Detective Croft’s face remained stone-cold.

"Mr. Miller, our forensic team processed the garage," Detective Croft continued, pulling out a small recording device. "We opened the secondary freezer under a search warrant. Inside, we discovered human skeletal remains wrapped in plastic, alongside personal effects belonging to a minor."

I closed my eyes, breathing in the sterile hospital air, feeling the horrific reality settle into my chest.

"It's Sarah, isn't it?" I asked softly. "Taylor's cousin."

Detective Croft hesitated, exchanging a brief glance with the officer beside her. "We are awaiting official DNA verification, but dental records from a 2008 missing person report match the preliminary findings. I need you to tell me everything that happened tonight, from the moment you stepped onto that property."

I pulled out my phone, unlocked the screen, and handed it to Detective Croft.

"There are two files," I said. "The first is an audio recording of Evelyn admitting she put Lily in the freezer for 'discipline.' The second is a video recording showing the state of the garage, the broken padlock, the open freezer where my daughter was trapped, and the interior of the second freezer."

Detective Croft took the phone, connected a pair of headphones, and played the audio file.

As Evelyn’s cold, dismissive voice filled the detective's ears—“It was only for ten minutes... My mother used ice baths to teach discipline...”—I watched Detective Croft’s jaw clench until the muscles stood out like cords under her skin.

She stopped the recording, looked up at me, and nodded once.

"Mr. Miller," she said firmly, "Child Protective Services is sending an emergency caseworker to process an immediate temporary custody order. Given this evidence, your ex-wife's mother is facing charges of attempted murder, felony child endangerment, and aggravated murder relating to the cold case."

"What about Taylor?" I asked, my heart pounding. "Where was my ex-wife when all of this was happening?"

As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the ER hallway swung open with a loud slam.

Taylor rushed down the corridor, her hair disheveled, her coat half-unbuttoned, her face flushed with frantic rage.

"Mark!" she screamed, spotting me through the glass bay. "What did you do?! What did you do to my mother?!"
