Chapter 6 - The Journals

By noon the next day, Lily’s core temperature had fully stabilized, and her blood work returned clean.
Child Protective Services completed their emergency assessment, issuing a temporary emergency custody order granting me 100% legal and physical custody of Lily, revoking all of Taylor’s custody rights pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
I brought Lily home to my one-bedroom apartment across town.
I gave her my bed, filled the room with warm blankets, stuffed animals, and soft yellow nightlights, and sat on the floor beside her bed until she finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
While she slept, my phone rang. It was Detective Croft.
"Mr. Miller," she said, her voice sounding exhausted over the line. "We've completed the preliminary examination of the three leather journals recovered from the freezer."
I stood up quietly, stepping into the small kitchen, closing the bedroom door behind me. "What was in them?"
"Evelyn Vance kept a meticulous, daily record from 2005 to 2009," Detective Croft revealed, the paper rustling over the phone. "She detailed her 'disciplinary methods' for Sarah. It was a systematic, horrific campaign of psychological and physical abuse. She used the unplugged freezer as a punishment chamber—putting the girl inside for hours at a time to 'break her spirit.'"
My hand tightened around the edge of the kitchen counter. "And what happened in 2008?"
"On November 14, 2008, Evelyn left the girl inside the freezer overnight," Detective Croft said, her voice trembling slightly despite her professional training. "When she opened it the next morning, Sarah had suffocated. Instead of calling the authorities, Evelyn sealed the freezer with dry lime, bought a heavy padlock, wrote fake postcards from California, and moved the freezer into the garage when Taylor bought the house five years ago."
"My God..." I whispered, sliding down against the kitchen cabinet, resting my forehead against my knees. "She moved a corpse into my house."
"Yes," Detective Croft confirmed. "And based on the journals, Evelyn began using the secondary, plugged-in freezer on your daughter, Lily, roughly six months ago—whenever Taylor was at work and you weren't there to protect her."
"Why didn't Lily tell us?" I choked out, tears of guilt burning my eyes. "Why didn't my little girl say something?"
"Because Evelyn threatened her," Detective Croft explained. "In the journal entry from three weeks ago, Evelyn wrote that she told Lily if she ever spoke a word to you or Taylor, she would put her in the 'locked freezer with the other bad girl' and never let her out."
I closed my eyes, the cold, terrifying horror of it sinking deep into my bones.
Lily hadn't kept quiet because she was obedient. She had kept quiet because she believed that if she spoke, she would disappear forever, just like her cousin Sarah.
"Mr. Miller," Detective Croft added softly, "the District Attorney is filing charges of First-Degree Aggravated Murder, Kidnapping, Felony Child Abuse, and Tampering with Evidence against Evelyn Vance. She will never leave prison again. As for Taylor... she is currently being investigated for child neglect, though she is cooperating fully with the prosecution."

"Thank you, Detective," I said. "Thank you for saving my girl."
I hung up the phone, walked back into the bedroom, and sat down beside Lily's bed. I took her small, warm hand in mine, resting my forehead against her knuckles, swearing a silent, sacred oath that no one would ever harm her again.
