Chapter 4 - The Breach

"Security! Code Red at Gate Three!" Dominic roared into his desk console, slamming his palm onto a red button beneath the desk.
Instantly, heavy steel blast shutters began to slide down over the windows of the mansion with a deafening hydraulic screech. Emergency red lights flared to life along the baseboards, casting long, bloody shadows across the dark mahogany walls.
Gunfire erupted outside—sharp, rhythmic suppressed pops of high-caliber rifles.
Clara gasped, backing away from the window as the first blast shutter sealed the glass. "Noah!" she screamed.
"Stay here!" Dominic commanded, pulling a heavy black semi-automatic pistol from a hidden drawer beneath his desk and racking the slide with a lethal clack.
"No!" Clara yelled, running past him toward the door. "He’s alone in the east wing! He’ll think the noise is the crash again!"
Dominic didn't stop her. He grabbed a second sidearm from a wall safe and sprinted out into the hallway right behind her.
The house was in utter chaos. The elegant silence of the Vale estate was shattered by shouting men, screaming staff, and the heavy thud of boots echoing through the marble corridors.
Mrs. Hargrove was running down the hallway, her hair coming loose from her neat bun, her face pale with terror. "Mr. Vale! They breached the service entrance! They bypassed the security codes!"
"Bypassed?" Dominic barked, stopping in his tracks. "The service codes are changed every twelve hours!"
Mrs. Hargrove stammered, pointing frantically toward the east wing. "I... I don't know! They just walked through!"
Dominic’s eyes narrowed on Mrs. Hargrove for half a second, but there was no time. He shoved past her, tearing down the corridor toward Noah’s playroom.
Clara reached the door first.
The room was dark, the emergency red lights casting an eerie glow over the white carpet.
Noah was huddled under the small wooden desk in the corner, his hands clamped tightly over his ears, his body shaking violently. He was making a low, heartbreaking humming sound—the sound of a terrified child trying to drown out the memory of screaming metal and gunshots.
"Noah!" Clara slid across the carpet on her knees, crawling under the desk beside him.
The moment she reached for him, Noah thrashed out, his arm striking her face. His tiny nails scratched her cheek, drawing a line of red blood.
Clara didn't pull back. She wrapped her arms around his small, trembling body, pulling him tight against her chest, placing her hand over the back of his head, forcing his face into the crook of her neck.
"I've got you," Clara whispered into his ear, ignoring the blood dripping down her cheek. "I'm not leaving you. I'm right here. Squeeze my hand, Noah. Squeeze it as hard as you can."
The boy’s thrashing stopped. He felt the warm, real pressure of her arms. He felt her heartbeat against his chest. Slowly, his tiny, trembling hand reached up and clutched the collar of her secondhand sweater, squeezing with all his remaining strength.
The door of the playroom slammed open.
Dominic stepped inside, covering the doorway with his weapon.
A tall intruder in dark tactical gear appeared in the hallway behind him, raising a suppressed rifle.
Dominic didn't flinch. He fired three rapid shots. The deafening BANG-BANG-BANG echoed through the room like thunder. The attacker collapsed backward onto the carpet, motionless.
Dominic turned back to Clara and Noah, his eyes blazing. "The house is compromised. They know the layout. We're moving to the safe room in the basement!"
He reached down, scooping both Noah and Clara up in his powerful arms.
As they sprinted down the back service stairs, Clara looked back over Dominic’s shoulder.
Standing at the top of the stairwell, completely unbothered by the gunfire, was Mrs. Hargrove.

She wasn't running. She wasn't hiding.
She was standing next to a second armed attacker, holding a small silver thumb drive in her hand, watching Dominic escape with a cold, triumphant smile on her face.
