Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Past

Two years later.

The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by news cameras and police escorts.

It was the final day of the federal trial against the remnants of The Anchor Society and Mrs. Evelyn Hargrove.

Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant dark blue dress, holding Dominic’s hand tightly.

Dominic sat beside her, calm, composed, and imposing. He had spent three days on the witness stand, delivering precise, damning testimony that dismantled the defense’s claims brick by brick. His cooperation with the Department of Justice had earned him complete immunity for his past logistics ventures, permanently clearing his name in the eyes of the law.

The heavy oak doors of the jury room opened.

The foreperson of the jury stood up, holding the verdict sheet.

"On the charge of conspiracy to commit murder, how do you find the defendant, Evelyn Hargrove?"

"Guilty," the foreperson declared.

"On the charge of treason, racketeering, and child endangerment?"

"Guilty on all counts."

A quiet sigh of relief rippled through the courtroom.

Mrs. Hargrove, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, her hands cuffed at her waist, turned her head slowly to look at Dominic and Clara.

She looked small, withered, and defeated. There was no pearl brooch, no cold arrogance, no power left.

Dominic didn't look at her with hatred. He didn't look at her with triumph. He simply held Clara’s hand, his expression serene, completely liberated from the darkness of his past.

As the judge slammed the gavel down, sentencing Hargrove to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, Dominic leaned over to Clara.

"It's over," Dominic whispered into her ear. "The past is finally dead."

Clara rested her head against his shoulder, holding his arm. "Now we live the future."
