Chapter 4 - The Ally in the Shadows

Back in the security annex, the heavy steel door creaked open again.

Emily didn't look up from her folded hands until she heard a quiet, hurried voice.

"Ms. Carter?"

Emily looked up. Standing in the doorway wasn't Detective Vance, and it wasn't one of the guards.

It was Nurse Megan Reed.

Megan was wearing her white lab coat over her blue scrubs, her stethoscope still draped around her neck. Her eyes were wide, darting anxiously down the empty hallway before she slipped inside the room and pulled the heavy door shut behind her, locking it with a sharp click.

Emily scrambled to her feet. "Megan? What are you doing here?"

"I only have two minutes before my shift change check-in," Megan whispered, stepping close, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched a thick manila folder against her chest. "Detective Vance told me what you told him. He asked if I’d talk to him off-site tomorrow morning. But... I couldn't wait until tomorrow."

"Why?" Emily’s heart leapt into her throat. "What’s happening?"

"They’re moving you," Megan said, her voice shaking with suppressed panic. "In ten minutes, two orderliness are coming down with an emergency transfer order signed by Dr. Sterling. They’re transferring you to St. Jude’s Psychiatric Facility across town under a involuntary 5150 hold. They’ve already updated your digital chart."

Emily’s stomach plummeted into an abyss. "A psychiatric hold? On what grounds?"

"Dr. Cole’s clinical notes," Megan said, her voice cracking. "I saw them on the nursing station terminal five minutes ago before they locked my user profile out of the system. He wrote that you exhibited violent delusions, paranoia, and acute withdrawal symptoms. He signed off on it as chief attending."

"That’s insane! You were there! You saw what happened!"

"I know what I saw!" Megan hissed, tears welling in her eyes. "And I know what I didn't see. I didn't see any request for narcotics. I didn't see any drug-seeking behavior. But it doesn't matter what I saw, Ms. Carter. Look at this."

Megan thrust the manila folder into Emily’s hands.

Emily opened it. Inside were printed copies of patient intake records, incident reports, and internal administrative memos.

"What are these?" Emily asked, scanning the pages.

"Patient files from the last three years," Megan whispered, looking over her shoulder toward the door. "Patients who were referred to Dr. Cole for routine diagnostic or gynecological work. Girls who came in alone. Girls who didn't have family in the city. Look at the discharge diagnoses on every single one of them."

Emily’s eyes scanned the pages. The names were different, but the diagnoses were identical down to the sentence structure: “Patient exhibited acute hysterical dissociation, paranoid delusions regarding attending physician, and acute substance-induced psychosis. Transferred to long-term care facility under administrative seal.”

Emily looked up, horror gripping her spine. "There are dozens of them."

"There are six that I found tonight," Megan said, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "Six women in three years who went into Examination Room Four with normal complaints and walked out—or were wheeled out—labeled as psychotic, unstable, or drug-addicted. And every single one of their files was restricted by Dr. Sterling’s office."

Emily clutched the folder to her chest like a shield. "Megan... why are you showing me this? If they catch you with these files, you'll lose your license. You could go to prison."

"Because six months ago, there was a girl named Chloe," Megan said, a tear finally spilling over her lashes. "She screamed down this exact hallway for help. And I walked away because Dr. Cole told me she was having a psychotic episode. Two weeks later, I heard she had 'checked out AMA' and vanished. I didn't ask questions. I kept my head down. And every time I walked past Room Four, I felt sick to my stomach."

Megan grabbed Emily by her uninjured wrist, her grip fierce and urgent.

"I am not walking away this time," Megan whispered fiercely. "Take this folder. Use the service elevator at the end of this hall—it leads straight to the underground delivery dock where the linen trucks park. The night driver, a friend of mine named Leo, leaves his truck running at 4:00 AM. Show him this badge."

Megan pulled a blue security access card from her pocket and pressed it into Emily’s palm.

"Go to Detective Vance’s home address—not his precinct, his home. Give him the folder. It’s the only copy outside the hospital’s main server."

Before Emily could answer, a loud, heavy knock rattled the security office door.

"Open up! Hospital transport service!" a gruff voice called out from the hallway.

Megan’s face drained of all color. "They're early. Run!"
