Chapter 7 - The Midnight Raid

By 5:30 AM, Detective Vance’s living room looked like a war room.
The coffee table was covered in highlighters, printed case notes, bank transfer records, and photocopies of the hospital’s internal server logs. Vance had spent the last three hours on encrypted phone calls with two federal district prosecutors and the state medical board’s chief investigator—men and women he had known for decades who had jurisdiction outside the corrupt local pockets controlled by St. Anne’s financial board.
"We have enough for a search and seizure warrant," Vance said, slamming a heavy law book shut on the table. "Not just for the medical center, but for Dr. Cole’s private residence across town. The federal prosecutor agreed to sign off on an emergency raid at dawn."
"Dawn is in thirty minutes," Emily said, sitting wrapped in a dry woolen blanket on the sofa, holding a mug of hot tea between her bandaged hands. "If Nathan finds out I escaped before the warrants are executed, he’ll wipe the main servers. He’ll scrub Examination Room Four down to the studs."
"That’s why we’re hitting both locations simultaneously," Vance said, reaching for his holster and strapping it over his shoulder. He pulled his leather jacket on and grabbed his car keys. "My team is moving on St. Anne’s administrative wing right now. A separate federal team is executing a no-knock warrant on Nathan Cole’s private estate in the hills."
Vance paused at the door and looked back at Emily.
"You're staying right here. Lock the deadbolt behind me. Don't open the door for anyone except me or federal marshals holding badge credentials."
"I'm coming with you," Emily said, standing up from the couch, letting the blanket drop to the floor.
Vance stared at her. "Ms. Carter, you're in no condition—"
"I am the primary witness to a felony assault and systemic medical kidnapping," Emily interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority. "You need someone who can walk into Examination Room Four right now and point out where the security blind spots are, where the manual override locks are, and where he hid the physical evidence. You’re not leaving me behind."
Vance studied her face for a long moment. He saw no fear left in her eyes—only a cold, sharp fire.

He tossed her a spare set of heavy wool socks and a oversized canvas jacket from his hall closet.
"Put those on," Vance said gruffly. "And stay in the back seat of my cruiser."
