Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

The victory at Oak Street sent shockwaves through the city’s business community, but Julian Carter was not a man who surrendered quietly.
By Friday afternoon, the local business news was dominated by headlines regarding a brutal corporate war erupting between Mercer National Logistics and Carter Enterprises.
Inside a luxury penthouse suite on 14th Avenue, Julian Carter stood before a floor-to-ceiling whiteboard, surrounded by four top corporate attorneys and his chief financial officer, Victor Vance.
Julian’s eyes were bloodshot, his velvet tuxedo replaced by a wrinkled dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves. Discarded coffee cups and legal briefs littered the glass tables around him.
“He bought my bank debt,” Julian raged, slamming a black marker against the whiteboard. “He embarrassed me in front of every major investor in the city! Do you have any idea what my stock price did this morning? It dropped twelve points!”
“Julian, calm down,” Victor Vance warned, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. “Mercer is a titan. His liquid cash reserves exceed $2 billion. If you try to fight him in an open market war, he will crush Carter Enterprises within a month.”
“I don't need to fight him in an open market,” Julian hissed, a dark, sinister grin curling his lips. “Mercer bought Oakridge Development’s debt, but he forgot about the acquisition deal he was trying to close with Apex Capital!”
Victor frowned. “The $900 million logistics merger? What about it?”
Julian stepped up to the whiteboard and drew a large box labeled APEX CAPITAL.
“Apex Capital’s managing director is my brother-in-law, Arthur Vance,” Julian revealed, tapping the glass. “Mercer skipped his keynote speech at Ashford Academy yesterday to play hero for a street kid. Apex’s board was offended. They’re meeting at 3:00 PM today to finalize a rival acquisition bid with European Freight Corp.”
Victor’s eyes widened. “If Apex signs with European Freight, Mercer loses his expansion into the East Coast shipping corridors. It will cost Mercer National over $200 million in lost projected revenue!”
Julian threw his marker onto the table, leaning over the board like a predator.
“Call Arthur Vance,” Julian commanded. “Tell him I want Apex Capital to terminate all negotiations with Mercer National publicly at 3:00 PM. I want a press conference called outside the Stock Exchange. I want the entire financial world to see that Daniel Mercer’s emotional stunt over a poor child cost his shareholders nearly a billion dollars!”
“And the Harper woman?” Victor asked quietly.

Julian’s eyes turned cold, devoid of human warmth.
“Send an inspector from the State Pharmacy Licensing Board to ValueCare on 5th Street,” Julian ordered smoothly. “Find an administrative violation—an expired bottle on a shelf, an error in a prescription log—and revoke Rachel Harper’s technician license before sunset. Let’s see how much her billionaire savior can protect her when she’s facing federal regulatory charges.”
