Chapter 7 - THE REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

At 2:45 PM, forty floors above the financial district, Daniel Mercer stood in the executive boardroom of Mercer National Tower.
Around the wide mahogany table sat Arthur Vance, chief financial officer, along with six senior board members of Mercer National Logistics. On the wall-mounted digital screens, live financial news feeds were displaying scrolling headlines:
APEX CAPITAL TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AT 3:00 PM. SOURCES REPORT MERGER WITH MERCER NATIONAL OFFICIALLY DEAD.
Arthur Vance was pacing frantically back and forth near the screens, his forehead gleaming with sweat.
“Daniel! You have fifteen minutes!” Arthur pleaded, pointing a trembling finger at the screen. “If Apex Capital signs with European Freight, our stock will take an immediate 15 percent hit at the opening bell on Monday! You need to call the board chairman right now and apologize for missing the breakfast!”
Daniel sat at the head of the table, perfectly calm, holding a hot cup of black tea.
Beside him sat Marcus Sterling, typing rapidly on a secure laptop connected to an encrypted server.
“Did you receive the security footage from ValueCare Pharmacy, Marcus?” Daniel asked softly, completely ignoring Arthur’s frantic pleas.
“Received two minutes ago,” Marcus replied, turning his laptop screen toward Daniel.
The high-definition video feed showed the interior of the pharmacy at 2:05 PM. A man wearing a delivery driver’s jacket had walked into the store, leaned over the secondary counter while pretending to check a package, and dropped a small glass vial behind the cash register.
Ten minutes later, the state board inspector had walked directly to that exact counter without searching any other shelf and picked up the bottle.
“The delivery driver is an employee of Vance Logistics—a subsidiary owned by Julian Carter’s CFO, Victor Vance,” Marcus stated. “And the lead board inspector received a $50,000 'consulting fee' wire transfer from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands at noon today.”
Daniel took a slow sip of his tea, setting the porcelain cup down gently on its saucer.
“Send the raw video feed, the bank wire receipts, and the federal corruption affidavits directly to the State Attorney General and the Chief of Police,” Daniel ordered. “Tell them I expect arrest warrants served before 3:00 PM.”
“Daniel!” Arthur yelled in frustration. “What about the $900 million merger?! Apex Capital is going live in ten minutes!”
Daniel looked at his CFO with an expression of quiet, commanding authority.
“Connect me to the video feed of Apex Capital’s press conference room,” Daniel said.
On the main wall screen, the live feed from the Stock Exchange press room illuminated.
The Managing Director of Apex Capital, Charles Thorne, stepped up to the podium, surrounded by microphoned stands and fifty financial journalists. Beside him stood Victor Vance, grinning triumphantly.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Charles Thorne announced into the microphones. “Apex Capital is formally announcing the termination of acquisition talks with Mercer National Logistics due to strategic divergence. We are officially opening exclusive merger negotiations with—”
Suddenly, the press room doors swung open violently!
Six federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by four uniformed state troopers, marched down the center aisle of the press room!
The reporters gasped, cameras flashing furiously!
“Charles Thorne! Victor Vance!” the lead federal agent boomed, holding up official arrest warrants. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit market manipulation, corporate extortion, and bribery of state regulatory officials!”
Victor Vance’s jaw dropped in absolute terror. He tried to scramble toward a back exit, but two state troopers seized his arms, slamming him against the press podium and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists!
Live television cameras captured every second of the arrest, broadcasting Victor Vance’s humiliated, terrified face to millions of viewers across the globe!
Inside Mercer National’s boardroom, Arthur Vance collapsed into a leather chair, his face completely drained of color as he watched his brother Victor dragged away in chains on live national television.

Daniel Mercer stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket.
“Arthur,” Daniel said calmly, looking down at his trembling CFO. “You are fired. Clean out your desk by 4:00 PM.”
