Chapter 6 - The Poison in the Well

The honeymoon period of Della’s new life was shattered on a cold Tuesday morning in October.
She arrived at her office to find three state inspectors waiting for her, accompanied by a hostile group of BrightLine board members who had remained loyal to the ousted Gerald Ashford.
"Mrs. Marsh," the lead inspector, a stern-faced man named Vance's corporate rival, Silas Thorne, said as he threw a stack of documents onto her desk. "We have received an anonymous tip regarding the safety certifications of the West Side overpass project—the very site where your husband tragically passed away."
Della felt her stomach drop. "Those certifications were audited and signed off by my office last week. Every single rusted bolt was replaced, and the structural integrity was verified by independent engineers."
"Really?" Thorne sneered, pulling out a set of laboratory reports. "Because our metallurgical tests show that the steel used in the replacement brackets was substandard—cheap, imported alloy that was forged to look like domestic grade. It’s brittle, Mrs. Marsh. If a heavy truck hits that guardrail again, the whole overpass will collapse."
"That’s impossible," Della whispered, her mind racing. "I personally inspected the delivery manifests. They were from American Steel in Chicago."
"The manifests were forged," one of the hostile board members interrupted. "And since your signature is on the final safety release, the state is launching a criminal investigation into your office for fraud and manslaughter hazard. You are suspended, Mrs. Marsh. Again."
Della sat down slowly, her hands cold. She realized immediately what had happened. It was a setup.
The old guard had intentionally swapped the high-grade steel for cheap alloy after her inspection, forging her signature on the final delivery slips. They wanted her ruined, and they wanted to use her husband's death site as the weapon to destroy her credibility.
Within an hour, the news had leaked to the local press.
“WIDOW TURNED EXECUTIVE INVESTIGATED FOR FRAUD AT HUSBAND’S DEATH SITE.”
The headlines were brutal, painting her as an incompetent opportunist who had used a tragedy to climb the corporate ladder, only to cut the same corners that had killed her husband.
Della sat in her dark office, her head in her hands, when her phone buzzed.
"Della," Rodrick’s voice came through, tense and controlled. "Where are you?"
"I'm at the office, Rodrick," she sobbed, unable to hold back her tears any longer. "They swapped the steel. I swear I inspected the right brackets, but they changed them in the middle of the night. My signature... it's on the paperwork."
"I know," Rodrick said, his voice a low, dangerous purr. "Silas Thorne is on the payroll of the Moretti syndicate—the family that has been trying to take over our shipping lines for years. They are using BrightLine to get to me through you. They know that if they ruin your reputation, they discredit my leadership of the company."

"I'm sorry, Rodrick," Della cried. "I brought this trouble to your door."
"You brought nothing but light into my life, Della," Rodrick said, his tone softening with an intense, raw emotion. "Now, listen to me. I want you to go home. Lock your doors. Victor is outside your building right now; he will escort you and Rosie to the estate. I am going to find whoever changed that steel, and I am going to make them eat it."
