Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Clouds

By the next afternoon, the storm had cleared, both literally and figuratively.
The police had raided the North Side substation, recovering the original manifests and the incriminating audio recording of Silas Thorne. Carl Miller’s confession was leaked to the media, completely exonerating Della Marsh and exposing the corrupt alliance between the rogue board members and the Moretti syndicate.
The press conference was held on the steps of the Halloway Courthouse.
Della stood before a sea of microphones, her hand tucked firmly into Rodrick’s arm. She looked stunning, her face clear and confident as she addressed the cameras.
"My husband’s death was a tragedy caused by corporate greed," Della said, her voice carrying across the plaza. "And yesterday, those same forces tried to use his memory to destroy my life and the safety of this city. But Halloway is changing. We are no longer going to let powerful men cut corners at the expense of working people. BrightLine Power is going to be a model of safety, and I will personally ensure that every worker goes home safe to their family."
The crowd erupted into applause, and as the reporters began shouting questions, Rodrick gently guided her down the steps toward his waiting car.
Inside the quiet vehicle, Della let out a long, shuddering breath. The tension of the last forty-eight hours finally dissolved, leaving her exhausted but lighter than she had felt in years.
"You did beautifully," Rodrick said, looking at her with a pride so deep it warmed her to her core.
"I couldn't have done it without you, Rodrick," she said, turning to him. "You saved me. Again."
"No, Della," Rodrick said softly, taking both her hands in his. He looked down at the pale scars on her palms—scars from the broken window of his grandmother's car. "You saved my family when you broke that glass. Everything I’ve done since then has just been trying to prove that I am worthy of your courage."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a stunning, brilliant-cut diamond ring set in a band of platinum shaped like delicate, interlocking vines.
"I know it’s soon," Rodrick said, his voice carrying a rare tremor of vulnerability. "And I know you still carry Caleb in your heart. I don't want to replace him, Della. But I want to build a life with you. I want to protect you, I want to love Rosie, and I want to be the man who stands beside you through every storm this city throws at us. Will you marry me?"
May you like
Della stared at the ring, tears of pure joy spilling over her lashes. She looked at Rodrick—the man who had bought a company to protect her, the man who had faced down monsters to clear her name, the man who looked at her as if she were the only thing that mattered in the entire world.
"Yes, Rodrick," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Yes, a thousand times."
