Chapter 6 - The Dark Basin

When Alexander opened his eyes, the first thing he felt was the ice-cold spray of seawater against his skin.
He was tied securely to a heavy steel chair inside a cavernous, rust-stained industrial warehouse. The smell of diesel fuel, rotting fish, and salt water hung thick in the air. High above, the metal roof groaned under the weight of the torrential rain. Outside the open bay doors, the dark waters of the Hudson River churned under the night sky.
His head throbbed violently, blood caked along his hairline.
"Ah, the sleeping prince awakens," a smooth, venomous voice echoed through the vast space.
Alexander lifted his head. Sitting twenty feet away on a shipping crate, sipping brandy from a crystal glass, was Julian. He had bandaged his jaw, but his eyes burned with an insane, murderous intensity.
Standing beside Julian were four heavily armed mercenaries, their rifles aimed directly at Alexander.
And tied to a similar steel chair five feet away was Rose. Her face was pale, her silver hair unraveled, but her posture remained straight, her eyes fixed on Julian with unyielding disdain.
"Where is Brooklyn?" Alexander demanded, his voice hoarse, straining against the heavy industrial zip-ties binding his wrists and ankles. "Where is my daughter, Julian?!"
"Relax, nephew," Julian said, taking a slow sip of his brandy. "The little brat escaped with your bruised bodyguard. My men couldn't track them in the storm. But it doesn't matter. She's a child. She has no legal standing, no power, and no proof."
Alexander let out a slow sigh of relief, thanking God in his heart that his daughter was safe.
"So this is where it ends?" Rose said, her voice echoed through the metal warehouse. "In a dirty dockland shed, Julian? You’ve spent thirty years running, hiding behind stolen names, terrified of a woman you thought you destroyed."
Julian slammed his glass down onto the crate, shattering it. He stood up, walking briskly toward Rose, his cane clicking sharply against the concrete floor.
"Shut up!" Julian screamed, his composure finally snapping. "I built Vanguard Holdings! I controlled politicians, judges, and banks! I was a god! And in forty-eight hours, you and your bastard son destroyed it all! You turned me into a fugitive!"
"You were always a fugitive, Julian," Rose replied calmly, staring him down without flinching. "A fugitive from your own conscience. You murdered your brother. You sold your nephew. You locked me in hell. You think money makes you a god? It just made you a monster."
Julian pulled his silver-handled pistol from his coat, pressing the cold barrel directly between Rose’s eyes.
"Say goodbye, Rose," Julian whispered. "Thirty years late, but the fire finally catches you."
"Wait!" Alexander roared, thrashing wildly against his chair. "Julian, wait! Look at me!"
Julian paused, turning his cold grey eyes toward Alexander. "Any last words, Leo?"
"I’ll give you everything," Alexander gasped, his mind working at lightning speed. "The master encryption keys to the Miller Capital reserve accounts. Two billion dollars in un-traceable Swiss crypto-assets. I’m the only one who has the biometric key. Kill us, and those funds are locked forever. You won't have a dime to pay off your cartels or escape the country."
Julian hesitated, his thumb hovering over the hammer of his gun. A greedy, calculating spark flared in his eyes.
"Two billion?" Julian murmured. "Un-traceable?"
"On my honor," Alexander bargained, leaning forward. "Release my mother. Put her on a boat out of here. The moment she is safe, I will give you the biometric transfer code."

Julian looked at Rose, then back at Alexander. A cruel, wicked grin slowly spread across his face.
"You really are your father's son," Julian laughed softly. "Always ready to sacrifice yourself for love. Very well, Leo. Show me the biometric key."
