Chapter 8 - The Edge of the River

The rain battered the dock like iron nails. The dark waters of the Hudson River swirled violently below the wooden pilings, fifty feet down.

Julian reached the edge of the dock, frantically trying to untie the heavy mooring rope securing his boat. He turned around, gasping for air, to find Alexander standing ten feet away, blocking his only exit.

The searchlights from the police helicopters above illuminated the two men in stark, dramatic white light, casting long, dancing shadows across the slick wooden planks.

"It’s over, Julian," Alexander said, his voice carrying over the storm. "There are no more shell companies. No more fake names. No more places to hide."

Julian pulled his backup pistol, aim shaking wildly as he leveled it at Alexander’s chest. "I’ll blow your heart out, Leo! Move away from the boat!"

"You don't have the stomach for it," Alexander said, taking a calm, deliberate step forward. "You’ve always hired other men to do your dirty work. You’re a coward, Julian. You poisoned my father. You trapped a helpless woman. You hid in the shadows for thirty years."

"I am a Miller!" Julian shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Everything your father had belonged to me! I took what was mine!"

"You took nothing," Alexander said, taking another step. "You spent thirty years in a prison of your own making, constantly looking over your shoulder, terrified of the truth. Look at you. You have billions, and you are completely worthless."

Julian roared in insane fury, pulling the trigger.

CLICK.

The chamber was empty. He had spent his last round in the warehouse.

Julian stared at the useless gun in horror. He threw it at Alexander’s face, turning to leap onto the speedboat.

Alexander lunged forward, grabbing Julian by his coat collar, pulling him back onto the dock. The two men crashed onto the slick, wet wood.

Julian fought like a cornered animal, clawing at Alexander’s face, trying to drive his knee into his stomach. But Alexander, fueled by thirty years of stolen childhood, held his grip. He grabbed Julian’s wrists, pinning him flat against the rain-soaked planks.

Julian struggled, gasping for air, looking up into the eyes of his nephew. He saw no mercy in Alexander’s face—only the unyielding judgment of justice.

"Please... Leo..." Julian whimpered, his terrifying persona completely collapsing into pitiful cowardice. "We’re blood... we’re family... don't let them lock me away..."

Alexander looked down at the broken, miserable man beneath him. He raised his fist, every instinct screaming at him to end his uncle's life right here.

He took a deep breath. He looked back toward the warehouse entrance, where Rose stood safely between Marcus and the SWAT team, watching him with tears in her eyes.

Alexander slowly unclasped his fist. He would not become a monster to defeat a monster.

"You aren't my family, Julian," Alexander said softly, his voice firm and cold. "My family is standing over there."

Alexander pulled Julian up by his lapels, slamming him face-first onto the wet dock just as four SWAT officers sprinted down the pier, slamming handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists.

"Julian Vance, alias Julian Miller," the lead officer declared, pressing him into the wood. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, treason, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As Julian was dragged away in chains, screaming curses into the storm, Alexander turned and walked back down the pier.

Rose broke away from the officers, running through the rain as fast as her aged legs could carry her. Alexander caught her in his arms, lifting her off her feet, hugging her as the rain washed away thirty years of blood, fire, and pain.
