Chapter 7 - THE UNINVITED GUEST

The recovery process wasn't just about public victories; it was about internal healing.
Over the next three months, Beatrice worked closely with physical therapists, nutritionists, and personal trainers hired by Dominic. She didn't starve herself or undergo drastic surgeries. Instead, under proper medical care and freed from the crushing stress of extreme poverty, her body began to heal. Her knee pain disappeared completely. She began walking three miles every morning along Lake Michigan with Dominic.
Her mother was moved into a beautiful private care home near the lake, where Beatrice visited her every afternoon.
Life had become a paradise she never thought she deserved.
However, unresolved trauma rarely dies without a final kick.
It was a cold November evening. Dominic was away in New York for an international business summit, leaving Beatrice alone in the Water Tower penthouse with Mrs. Gable.
At 9:00 PM, the intercom chimed.
Mrs. Gable answered it, her brows furrowing. "Miss Beatrice... there is someone downstairs claiming to be your cousin, Sarah. She says it's an emergency regarding your mother."
Beatrice’s heart skipped a beat. "Sarah? Send her up."
Five minutes later, the elevator doors opened.
Out stepped Sarah Gallagher, Beatrice’s thirty-year-old cousin. Sarah was slim, glamorous, and had spent her entire life mocking Beatrice for her weight and her choice to become a nurse instead of pursuing corporate wealth. When Beatrice lost her license, Sarah had been the first to share the news on social media with fake sympathy.
Beside Sarah stood an unexpected guest: Bradley Pierce.
Bradley looked completely broken. His expensive designer clothes were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting jacket. His face was sunken, and his eyes were wild with desperation.
Beatrice stood up from her sofa, her face hardening. "What is this? How did you get up here?"
"Beatrice! Cousin!" Sarah gushed, trying to step forward with open arms. "Oh my god, look at this place! It's incredible! I was so worried about you—"
"Stop right there, Sarah," Beatrice said, holding up her hand. "You haven't called me in three years. You didn't come to my mother's bedside when she was starving. Why are you here?"
Sarah’s fake smile faded, replaced by an anxious, twitching expression. She looked at Bradley.
Bradley fell to his knees on the penthouse carpet—a pathetic mirror image of the night in the boardroom.
"Beatrice! Please!" Bradley sobbed, crawling forward a few inches. "My father lost everything! Vance Global destroyed our family's assets! I can't get a job anywhere in the country! I'm facing five years in prison for financial misconduct because Dominic launched a forensic audit on my accounts!"
Beatrice looked down at him with quiet detachment. "You brought this on yourself, Bradley."
"Your cousin told me she could get me in to see you!" Bradley cried, grabbing at the hem of his jeans. "Please, tell Dominic to drop the charges! I'll do anything! I'll work for you! I'll clean your floors!"
Sarah stepped forward, her voice rising in irritation. "Beatrice, don't be heartless! He's willing to pay you back! And besides, you're living in luxury now because you got lucky with some billionaire! Don't forget where you came from!"
Beatrice looked at Sarah, then down at Bradley.
"I haven't forgotten where I came from," Beatrice said calmly. "I came from twelve-hour shifts saving lives. I came from dirty water and broken knees. But I earned my dignity back. You two never had any to begin with."
Beatrice turned to Mrs. Gable. "Call security."
"Beatrice, you bitch!" Sarah shrieked, taking a step toward her. "You think you're better than us now just because you're sleeping with Dominic Vance? You're still just a fat, pathetic—"
Before Sarah could finish her sentence, the elevator doors slid open again.
Dominic walked out.
He had caught an earlier flight back from New York. He was wearing his long black overcoat, rain droplets glistening on his shoulders. His cold blue eyes swept over Sarah and Bradley like a winter blizzard.
"Finish that sentence," Dominic said softly, stepping into the room.
Sarah froze, her breath catching in her throat. The color completely drained from her face.
Dominic didn't even look at Bradley. He walked straight up to Sarah, stopping an inch away. The sheer air of menace surrounding him made Sarah take three trembling steps back until her heels hit the elevator wall.
"If you ever speak to my wife-to-be like that again," Dominic whispered, "I will ensure that you and every member of your immediate family are audited by every tax agency in the Western Hemisphere. You will lose your car, your house, and your social standing by tomorrow afternoon."
Sarah burst into panicked tears. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
"Marcus," Dominic called out without turning his head.
Marcus stepped out of the elevator behind him, carrying two heavy security guards.
"Throw them out," Dominic commanded. "And notify building management that if Bradley Pierce sets foot within five blocks of this building again, they will lose their operating permit."
"Yes, Mr. Vance."
Marcus grabbed Bradley by the collar of his coat, hauling him up off the floor like a sack of trash, while the other guards escorted Sarah out. Their screaming and weeping faded as the elevator doors closed.
Dominic took a deep breath, removed his overcoat, and tossed it onto a chair. Then he turned to Beatrice, his dark expression instantly melting into warmth.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently.
Beatrice smiled, walking into his arms and resting her head against his chest. "I'm better than okay. I'm free."
