Chapter 8 - THE RETURN TO LAKEVIEW

Six months later.

The grand reopening of the Lakeview Memorial Trauma Center was the biggest healthcare event of the year in Chicago.

Following the arrest and conviction of Dr. Harrison Weber, the hospital had undergone a complete restructuring. Vance Global Holdings had bought a controlling stake in the hospital, ousting the corrupt board of directors and appointing a new team of ethical medical leaders.

Today was the official opening of the Beatrice Gallagher Emergency Wing.

The lobby was filled with hundreds of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and former patients. Banners hung from the glass ceilings, bearing Beatrice's name in bold gold lettering.

Beatrice stood near the main entrance, dressed in a sleek silver suit. She looked radiant, healthy, and completely transformed—not because she was thinner, but because her eyes shone with confidence and peace.

A young woman in a crisp blue nursing uniform timidly walked up to her.

"Nurse Gallagher?" the girl asked nervously.

Beatrice turned with a warm smile. "Yes? And please, call me Beatrice."

"My name is Mia," the young nurse said, her hands shaking slightly as she held a notebook. "I... I read your story in the medical journal. I was framed by an attending physician six months ago at another clinic. I thought my life was over. I was working at a diner, scrubbing tables..."

Mia began to cry softly.

"Then I saw your foundation," Mia continued. "Your lawyers took my case. They proved I was innocent. I got my license back last week, and... I was just hired here today."

Beatrice felt a deep warmth swell in her chest. She stepped forward and pulled Mia into a gentle hug.

"You see?" Beatrice whispered into her ear. "They can break your heart, but they can't take away your hands. You're a nurse, Mia. Go save lives."

Mia wiped her eyes and nodded gratefully before heading toward the floor.

Dominic walked up behind Beatrice, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"Look at what you built," Dominic murmured, watching the bustling hospital floor.

"We built it," she corrected softly, turning in his arms to face him. "Dominic... three years ago, when I stayed in that trauma room pumping your heart, I thought I was just doing my job."

"You were keeping my soul anchored to this world," Dominic said, looking deeply into her eyes. "And every day since, you've kept me human."

May you like

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.

Beatrice’s breath caught.
