Chapter 6 - The Trap in the Shadows

The transfer to Blackwood Maximum Security Facility was designed to break Julian's spirit completely.

Unlike the general medium-security prison, Blackwood was a fortress of brutalist concrete, where the sun never reached the interior corridors. Julian was placed in solitary confinement—a dark, six-by-eight-foot cell with a concrete slab for a bed and a tiny slit in the heavy steel door for air.

When Richard Vance arrived at Blackwood the following morning demanding to see his client, he was kept waiting in a bare reception room for over three hours.

When Julian was finally brought into the attorney conference room, Richard was shocked by his appearance. Julian looked exhausted, dark circles bruised under his eyes, his physical frame visibly shaking under the weight of the heavy chains.

"Julian!" Richard stood up, stepping toward him, but the guard roughly pushed Richard back to his side of the table.

"Sit down, counselor," the guard warned.

Richard sat down, taking a deep breath, trying to project absolute confidence. He waited until the guard stepped back to the corner of the room before leaning across the table.

"Julian, listen to me very carefully," Richard whispered rapidly. "My mother told me what happened. I've spent the last three days going over your trial files. I know about Arthur Pendelton. I know about Detective Miller hiding the second blood sample. And I know about the trust fund paying for your sister Lily's treatment in Switzerland."

Julian froze. His breathing hitched, his eyes widening with pure, unadulterated terror. "How... how do you know about Lily?"

"Because my firm has resources, Julian," Richard said gently. "We traced the wire transfers from Pendelton Global's offshore shell company straight to the clinic in Zurich. You didn't commit that crime. Arthur was driving your car, wasn't he?"

Julian shook his head frantically, his chains rattling loudly against the metal chair. "No! No! You're wrong! I was driving! I drank too much, I hit those kids! It was me!"

"Stop lying to protect them, Julian!" Richard urged, his voice thick with frustration and empathy. "They are using you! They moved you to Blackwood to scare you into staying silent!"

"You don't understand!" Julian cried out, leaning forward as far as his chains would allow, his voice cracking with desperate emotion. "If I talk, they cut off the funding! Lily has a rare relapse condition! She needs specialized immunotherapy that costs eighty thousand dollars a month! If that money stops, she dies in weeks! Do you hear me?! She dies!"

The truth hung in the air, heavy and heartbreaking.

Richard looked at the young man sitting across from him. Julian wasn't a criminal. He was a martyr who had allowed himself to be buried alive in the darkest hole on earth just to keep his little sister breathing.

"Julian," Richard said, his voice dropping to a deep, resolute tone. "Look at me."

Julian looked up, tears of helpless frustration shining in his eyes.

"My family's estate trust is worth over fifty million dollars," Richard said clearly and unhesitatingly. "As of eight o'clock this morning, my mother signed the legal paperwork transferring full guardianship and medical power of attorney for Lily to our family. We have already wired two years' worth of medical funding directly to the clinic in Zurich. The Pendeltons no longer have any leverage over your sister's life."

Julian stared at Richard, completely stunned. His lips parted, but no sound came out. "You... you paid for Lily?"

"She is completely safe, Julian," Richard confirmed, a warm, reassuring smile breaking across his face. "Her doctors have been instructed to accept orders only from my mother. Senator Pendelton cannot touch her. Arthur cannot touch her. The only person left to save now... is you."

A heavy silence fell over the room. For three long years, Julian had carried the crushing weight of the world on his shoulders, enduring beatings, humiliation, and the dark despair of a ruined future. Now, suddenly, the cage door had been thrown wide open.

Julian bowed his head. A single, deep sob escaped his chest, followed by another, as years of pent-up grief and terror finally poured out of him. He wept openly in the cold interrogation room, his chain-bound hands covering his face.

"It was Arthur," Julian choked out between sobs, lifting his head. "Arthur was driving. He was speeding at ninety miles an hour on the mountain road. He lost control... he hit that car. He pulled me into the driver's seat while I was unconscious from the impact..."

"I hear you, Julian," Richard said, standing up and placing a firm, supportive hand on Julian's shoulder. "I hear you. Now, let's go bring down the Pendeltons."
