Chapter 8 - The Highway Ambush

Night had fallen, and a thick, heavy fog rolled across the state highway as Richard drove his sedan back toward the city. The rain had returned, slicking the road and reducing visibility to mere feet.

In his passenger seat sat the briefcase containing the black telemetry box—the key that would set Julian free and dismantle the Pendelton empire.

Suddenly, heavy headlights flared in Richard's rearview mirror. A massive black pickup truck approached at high speed, tailgating his bumper dangerously.

Richard tapped his brakes, signaling for the truck to pass. Instead, the truck accelerated, slamming violently into the rear of Richard's sedan!

💥 CRASH!

The impact jerked Richard's head back, his tires screeching as the car swerved across the wet lane. "What the hell?!" Richard gasped, fighting to regain control of the steering wheel.

The pickup truck pulled up alongside his driver's side. Through the rain-streaked window, Richard caught a glimpse of the driver—it was Officer Miller, wearing a dark raincoat, his face twisted in a cold, murderous scowl.

Miller turned his heavy steering wheel, ramming his truck straight into the side of Richard's sedan, trying to force him off the steep embankment toward the river below!

Metal ground against metal with a deafening screech, sparks flying into the night air. Richard’s car slid toward the guardrail, the tires losing traction on the mud.

"Come on... come on!" Richard gritted his teeth, slamming his foot on the accelerator and turning into the spin. He managed to break away from the truck's grill, but the heavy pickup swerved around, cutting directly across his lane and blocking the highway.

Richard slammed on his brakes, his sedan coming to a halt just inches from the truck's side door.

Before Richard could put his car in reverse, Miller stepped out of the pickup holding a heavy iron tire iron. He walked toward Richard's car, his eyes cold and deadly.

"Hand over the briefcase, Vance!" Miller shouted over the sound of the howling wind and rain. "Hand it over, or you don't walk away from this highway!"

Richard locked his doors, his heart pounding in his throat. He reached for his phone on the dashboard to call emergency services, but Miller raised the iron bar, smashing it violently into the driver's side window!

Glass shattered inward, showering Richard with dangerous shards. Miller reached through the broken window, unlocking the door and pulling Richard out onto the wet asphalt, slamming him against the hood of the car.

"Where is it?!" Miller barked, raising the iron bar to strike Richard.

Suddenly, the blare of a loud air horn echoed through the fog!

A massive state police convoy—led personally by the State Police Chief and accompanied by three news broadcast vans—came speeding around the curve, their bright red and blue lights blinding the dark highway!

Earlier that evening, predicting that Pendelton would attempt a desperate move, Evelyn Vance had used her extensive political network to contact the State Attorney General directly, presenting Julian's signed affidavit and demanding a protective escort for her son.

Officer Miller froze, his eyes wide with horror as dozens of armed state troopers spilled out of their vehicles with weapons drawn.

"STATE POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

Miller dropped the iron bar, his hands flying into the air as troopers tackled him to the wet pavement, pinning him down and snapping heavy cuffs over his wrists.

Richard slumped against his car hood, gasping for air, bruised but alive. He reached into the passenger seat, pulling out the undamaged briefcase.

He looked up into the flashing lights of the police cars, knowing that the trap had failed. The Pendeltons' reign of terror was officially over.
