Chapter 6 - The Unspoken War

The capture of Dr. Harrison Vance triggered a silent, devastating purge within the highest ranks of the Chicago underworld.

Inside the subterranean interrogation rooms beneath the Lombardi estate, Vance broke within two hours under Gabriel’s cold questioning. He confessed everything—naming six high-ranking lieutenants within the Lombardi organization who were secretly on the payroll of the Moretti family.

Over the next forty-eight hours, those lieutenants vanished from the city streets without a sound.

While the storm raged outside, the private medical pavilion on the east wing remained an island of absolute focus and healing.

My daily routine with Sebastian became grueling, intense, and deeply personal. We spent four hours every morning breaking down the scar tissue, followed by three hours of targeted electrical stimulation on his leg muscles.

It was a scorching Friday afternoon in the private gym.

Sebastian lay on his stomach on the high treatment table. Sweat glistened across his powerful back as I drove my elbows into his lower lumbar tissue, working through the final layers of calcified adhesion.

"Ah!" Sebastian growled, his hands gripping the leather handles of the table. "Clare... deeper."

"If I go any deeper today, I’ll cause internal hematomas," I panted, wiping sweat from my own brow. "Your tissue is softer now, Sebastian. The nerve bundle is almost completely freed from the muscle wall. The bone spur is exposed."

"How much longer?" he asked, turning his head to look at me, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"The scar tissue is ready," I said softly, stepping back to catch my breath. "We can schedule the micro-decompression surgery for next week."

Sebastian slowly sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the table.

He looked at me, his grey eyes searching my face with an intensity that made the quiet gym feel electric.

"You’re afraid," Sebastian noted softly.

"I’m a physical therapist, Sebastian," I murmured, leaning against the edge of the adjacent counter. "Next week, a neurosurgeon is going to put a scalpel two millimeters from your spinal cord. If his hand slips one fraction of a millimeter... you'll be paralyzed permanently, and no amount of physical therapy will ever fix it."

Sebastian maneuvered himself off the table, sliding effortlessly into his wheelchair. He rolled closer to me, stopping until he was inches away.

He reached out, taking my hand in his large, warm palm. His thumb gently rubbed the calloused skin of my palm—skin that had spent three weeks fighting for his body.

"Do you know why I refused twenty surgeons over twenty years, Clare?" Sebastian asked quietly.

"Why?"

"Because none of them cared whether I lived or died," he said softly, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register. "They saw a famous patient. They saw a payday. But when you look at me... you don't see a crime boss, and you don't see a payday. You see a man who was broken, and you fight for him."

"Sebastian..." I whispered, my breath catching in my throat as he raised my hand to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my knuckles.

"If I go under that knife next week," Sebastian murmured, his eyes holding mine with unshakeable devotion, "it won't be for revenge against the Morettis. It won't be for my empire. It will be so I can stand up, take you by the hand, and walk you out of this dark life into the sunlight."

A sharp wave of emotion hit me like a physical blow. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked down at this dangerous, powerful man who had completely surrendered his heart to me.

Before I could answer, the gym door slid open.

Gabriel walked in, his face set in grim, dark lines.

"Boss," Gabriel said quietly. "Julian just entered the estate. He brought three senior capos with him. They're demanding an emergency meeting in the grand hall."

Sebastian’s expression hardened instantly. The gentle lover vanished, replaced once again by the formidable crime boss.

"Julian," Sebastian murmured, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "My dear brother smells weakness."
