Chapter 7 - The Snake at the Table

The grand hall of the mansion was freezing.
Julian Lombardi stood at the center of the room, flanked by three heavy-set men in leather coats. He looked restless, his gold watch catching the dim light of the chandeliers, a triumphant, aggressive energy radiating from his posture.
Sebastian rolled his wheelchair to the head of the raised dais, with Gabriel standing behind him like a stone sentinel. I stood near the side archway, keeping myself in the shadows, watching the interaction with growing anxiety.
"Sebastian," Julian began, spreading his hands in a grand gesture. "We need to talk about the management of the family. Vance is gone. Six of our district lieutenants have been removed. The streets are whispering that the Lombardi family is undergoing an internal purge."
"The streets can whisper whatever they want, Julian," Sebastian replied calmly, leaning his chin on his hand. "I am cleaning my house."
"You're creating chaos!" Julian shouted, taking two steps forward. "The Morettis are seeing our distraction! They're moving on our northern distribution docks as we speak! You've locked yourself in this mansion for three weeks with a female therapist, spending millions on secret medical treatments while the family bleeds!"
One of the capos stepped forward, his voice gruff. "Julian is right, Boss. We respect you. You built this empire. But a boss who stays locked in a room, chasing fairy tales about walking again, can't protect us from the Morettis."
Sebastian slowly straightened his back. A terrifying, icy calm settled over his face.
"Are you challenging my leadership, Julian?" Sebastian asked softly.
Julian smiled—a cold, ruthless expression that mirrored his brother's ferocity.
"I'm proposing a vote of transition," Julian declared, pulling a folded parchment from his coat pocket. "Under our family charter, if the sitting boss is physically incapacitated and unable to field a active defense of our territory, the inner council can transfer operational command to his second-in-command. Me."
My heart stopped. A bloodless coup. Julian had used the purge of Dr. Vance to manipulate the remaining capos into believing Sebastian was losing his mind to desperation.
"You need four votes from the inner council, Julian," Gabriel warned, his hand moving to his sidearm. "You only have three capos here."
"I have the fourth vote right here," a dark voice spoke from the upper balcony.
We all looked up.
Victor, the quiet chief financial officer, stood on the balcony, holding a heavy black folder.
"Victor?" Sebastian said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "You too?"
"It’s strictly business, Sebastian," Victor said coldly down from the balcony. "The Moretti syndicate offered us a fifty-fifty merger if Julian takes command. If you stay boss, this war will destroy our financial reserves. It’s time for you to retire to your estate permanently."
Julian pulled a sleek silver pen from his pocket, tossing the parchment onto Sebastian's lap.
"Sign the operational transfer, brother," Julian sneered. "Or the council will declare you unfit by midnight, seize your assets, and kick you and your little therapist out into the rain."
Sebastian looked down at the parchment on his lap. He didn't flinch. He didn't yell.
Slowly, he looked up at his brother, a terrifying, dark smile spreading across his face—a look of such absolute, lethal confidence that Julian took a involuntary step back.
"You always were impatient, Julian," Sebastian murmured softly. "You thought because I sat in this chair, I was blind. You thought because my legs didn't move, my empire was weak."
Sebastian reached out, picked up the parchment, and slowly tore it into four neat pieces, letting them drop to the floor like snow.
"The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday morning," Sebastian said, his voice echoing through the massive hall like thunder. "And on Friday... I am going to walk into the Moretti headquarters, throw your head onto their table, and remind this city who owns Chicago."
May you like
Julian’s face went red with fury. "You're insane! You can't walk! You haven't walked in twenty years!"
"Then come back on Friday, Julian," Sebastian whispered, his eyes flashing like raw steel. "And see what happens to traitors."
